It's sometimes a solo act, but I also play with some great musicians. On the recordings, you can hear The Vagrant Shrew (Bass/Vocals) and Daniel Merrel (Drums/Vocals/Keys/Mandolin) in the Northwest, and Lightnin' Lee Jellison (Drums/Vocals) and Daniell Boudreau (Bass/Vocals) in the Southwest.
Influences
Shawn Mullins, Brandi Carlile, Swell Season, Band of Horses, Pearl Jam, Leonard Cohen, Townes Van Zandt, Wilco, Johnny Cash, Bad Religion, Rancid, Social Distortion, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Zach Simpson, Rachael Yamagata, REM, Weakerthans, Modest Mouse, a whole lot of 50's 60's 70's and 90's music?
SUV live with The Long Walk at Wandering Goat
The sound was born from a marriage of '90s punk rock and a younger generation of indie-rock. Beginning as a writer in punk rock bands, Justin Rayfield always leaned toward the melodic, harmony driven variety. The melodies and harmonies have evolved into a softer style and, while little of the punk roots are still showing, the passion remains with a vocal intensity that could only come from such a high-energy beginning.
The latest musical projects, “Made Of Skin” and “The Long Walk”, are the result of years of growing and collaboration with other talented musicians.
After years of living and playing in the Northwest, Rayfield moved to Austin, TX to start all over with a new story and an old hunger.
