    Ryan's Interests
GeneralBusiness as Un-Usual, Aiding and Abetting, Shaking and Stirring, the Design of the World, Uncharted Paths, Imperfect Maps, the Bland/the Idle/the Tedium/the Everyday-Anyday-Firstday-and-Last, Jagged Edges, Smooth Edges, Hinterlands, the Motions that Mouths Make, Decay and Errata, Alchemy, Mythology (personal and otherwise), Methodology, Phenomenology, things Avant-Garde, Poetics (as an abstract endeavor), the Law (not in a Kafka-esque way ... intellectual property, game theory and the law, economics and the law ... how it can be used to stimulate inovation & creativity), Deliciousness, Mortification of the Flesh (Marathons, Triathlons, etc), Binging/Purging, Culinary Debauchery (I've become a cookbook collector and the proud owner of a bad-ass food processor), Boozing (weird liquors crowd my shelves ... I can't resist buying things like Luxardo Maraschino liqueur ... I've even started making my own: 5 gallon jugs of obscure liquids are steeping in my closet ... bubbling, clouded with herbs and fruit peels), Savory/Sweet, Sour/Bitter, Oscillation, Overlap, Override, Refraction, Contradiction, Pulsation, Attenuation, Taut and Thin, Sinew and Ligament, Crease, Crevice, Minima/Maxima, Moss and/or Grass, Succulents, Succulence, Dessicants, Palliatives, Tinctures, Scattering of Waves (Light, Sound, and Water).
MusicNow Playing: Current 93 "Black Ships Ate the Sky"; Scott Walker "Climate of the Hunter" and "The Drift"; Lau Nau "Kuutarha"; Congotronics 2 "Buzz N'Rumble From the Jungle"; John Fahey "Day's Have Gone By"; Arthur Russell "First Thought Best Thought"; The Lamp of the Universe "Earth, Spirit, and Sky"; Dabry "Two/Three"; Fanfare Ciocarla "Gili Garabdi"; New York Noise 2; Heavy Meckle "A Grime DJ Mix"; DJ/Rupture "Low Income Tomorrowland"; Nurse With Wound "Shipwreck Radio Volume 2"; Lil Wayne "Tha Carter II"; Tod Dockstader "Aerial 1 & 2"; Burning Star Core "The Very Heart of the World"; Atheist "Unquestionable Presence" (the Mahavishnu Orchestra of Death Metal); Glen Brown "Rhythm Master 2"; AFX "Hangable Autobulb"; etc.
MoviesRecent additions: The Long Goodbye, Grizzly Man, Gunner Palace, My Own Private Idaho, Onibaba, Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, F for Fake, Dog Soldiers (good pulp - soldiers and werewolves in Scotland!), the complete Mr. Arkadin, The Scent of Green Papaya, all Kurosawa's non-samurai flicks with Toshiro Mifune. I want to be Toshiro Mifune when I grow up. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Grey Gardens, Salesman, Vengeance is Mine, Tatooed Life, Au Hazard Balthasar, and Pickpocket in the past couple months. Any Chris Marker (but particularly Sans Soliel), all Fellini, Herzog (Aguirre: Wrath of God, but the documentaries are great too), Tarkovsky's Stalker (not his best, but the one that opened my eyes), Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (Ashik Kerib and Paradjanov's other films are beutiful and completely different from Shadows), Cremaster 2, Happy Together, Dog Star Man, Satantango, Daisies (big fan of the Czech new wave), The Celebration, Visitor Q, Playtime, any Greenaway, Trier's Medea, Conspirators of Pleasure, Pasolini (even when he sucks, you appreciate the seriousness), Orson Welles behind or in front of the camera, Brakhage, If ... (more hysterical in its way than A Clockwork Orange), Secret of the Beehive, Robert Kramer is too unknown (Ice: A Coup and Milestones are brilliant), Les Vampires, Ichikawa ... and then there are silent films ...
TelevisionI used to despise television, saw it as an empty medium ... with the rare exception - V, Twin Peaks, the first season of Miami Vice, and so on. How misguided! At its best, television is the creaters medium (writers, directors, etc). Big love for Freaks and Geeks, Firefly, some seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the second season of Angel, Deadwood, The Office (British and American), Strangers with Candy, Kids in the Hall, Mr. Show, Little Britain, Arrested Development, Battlestar Galactica, Veronica Mars, Extras, Carnivale, Lost, The Prisoner (totally pilfered by Lost), and the list goes on (as all my lists do).
BooksNew Money: Cane (whoever says this is "black" literature is missing that this is American Literature ... as much in the blood of WCW as Baldwin or Hurston), The Magic Christian, Pedro Paramo, Confessions of Xeno, Valis, Embers, Ragtime, The Moviegoer, Derek Walcott, Revolutionary Road, and The Power and the Glory (been on a big American kick). Old Money: A Thousand Plateaus, all Samuel Beckett, No. 111 2.7.93 - 10.20.96 by Kenneth Goldsmith, all Kafka (but truly/deeply, The Castle), dusty classic stuff (Homer, Virgil, Dante, Ovid, Tasso, Ariosto, Njal's Saga, etc), illustrated dimestore kids stuff (Garth Ennis, Grant Morrison, Akira, Alan Moore, Lone Wolf & Cub, Y: The Last Man, Bone (if I every get through the phonebook sized monster), Frank Miller, etc), reference books (The OED, The Oxford Companion's to Anything/Everything, Brewer's Rogues or their dictionary of Phrase and Fable ...), Glass Bead Game, Genealogy of Morals, A Humument, Hopscotch, 1001 Nights, Quixote, Vico, Ficciones, Finnegan's Wake, literary smut (de Sade, Bataille, Guyotat, Burroughs, Acker, James Havoc, Artaud ...), gothic creeps (Lovecraft, Machen, LeFanu, Algernon Blackwood, Lewis' Monk, any Huysmans ...), Susan Howe, Polish poets (Zbigniew Herbert, Milosz, Zagajewsky ...)
HeroesSamuel Becket and Orson Welles are foundation. Keiji Haino for his single minded pursuit of a personal sound world. Lance Armstrong, a machine for turning pain into velocity. Larry Lessig and Siva Vaidhyanathan; showing us the importance of engaging with the law so that we don't turn America into a control/permission culture ... this isn't just about technology; it's about fundamental freedoms that can be slowly chipped away until you've got nothing left. Brewster Kahle, Google, John Perry Barlow, Craig Venter ... information surrounds you. Iannis Xenakis ... rebel leader, emigre, engineer, architect, composer, installation artist, theoretician ... polymathic perversity at its best. Sir Richard Francis Burton; the mountains of the moon, the dunes of Arabia, translator of The Thousand Nights and One Night, first European to see Lake Taganyika, counsul to Trieste ... a legendary figure, straddling the light and dark of British imperialism. Werner Herzog ... total audacity ... strange mix of something malevolent and ecstatic ... a poetic enigma. Nikolai Tesla - inspiring enough that we can forgive him for the horrible band that appropriated his name. After all, appropriation of his genius was a lifelong theme. John Galliano, Hedi Slimane and a lot of other guys and girls that make great pants. Scott Walker for his round (hollow? hallowed?) voice and his penchant for crooning in unfashionable ways. Neither mainstream nor fringe ... from a different time of a different place.

   Ryan's Blurbs
About me:
I spent my childhood as a Gaucho - a freeriding horseman, orphaned to la pampa. By day we herded cattle and scalped Mapuche rustlers, dropping carcasses in herbaceous folds or stacked at the base of Calden trees. Eyes for the condors; scavengers will pick the corpses clean, warning signs to others. My poncho, my home under ... a hemisphere of stars. Ah, and nights around the fire … tobacco, rum, mate … comtemplating the grassland’s unclaimed abundance. Drink would flow and, inevitably, blood would spill. I’ll never forget the shuffling rhythm of Pampean grass. Its sharp edge, fibrous strands, whispering like native hips. I left the grasslands in 1912 on an ocean liner bound for Paris. Looking for fortune; fate brought only sorrow. In the ship's galley I played the zero hour, lunar demise, the comedy of whorehouses – Tango. My bandoneon was the Capitan’s pleasure during the voyage that saw the Lusitania sunk in the North Atlantic. A thousand souls lockered in the sea's cold fathoms. But a grand ship she was; a floating palace. And Capitan? An old salt that loved bawdy tango damn near as much as he liked the ladies, pinching and slapping, seizing liberties they would never willingly surrender. When lightning strikes I still take fright, fearing the German torpedoes have struck again, a million-ton hammer's merciless crack to Lusi’s wrought boiler. Though my days in the Quartier Latin - mingling with the knife-grinders, the umbrella menders, the milk goats, and serenading the saturnine bordellos of Rue de la Huchette - are long past, I miss them not. I am now the proud owner/operator of a Helado de Coco cart in Logan Square. Surely you’d like to submerge yourself in a bath of my delicious and refreshing coconut crystals?

Who I'd like to meet:
Girls with webcams and phone-sex lines; undiscovered goth/industrial/hip-hop/indie bands with serious underground cred; portly and/or married women from Indiana that think I'm "cute" or "pretty" (like buttons? midgets on ponies? a lavender scented doily?); muscle bears and gay Asian men ... shirtless ... shaven ... underwear waistband exposed, GOD DAMN IT - by your brand you shall be judged; the trad MySpace dregs. Welcome, bottom feeders!

What will you do to honour the passing year? Look back with an amused eye, or forward with expectation?

Have a lovely birthday!

hey Ryan,

Really great reading your interests. Fantastic stuff.

Sir Richard Francis Burton: his life should be required reading in High School. He dyed his skin with henna to make the required Haj.

I've placed several movies on order based on your list : )

Have you seen the work of Alex de la Iglesia? El Dia de la Bestia? The Commonwealth?

Dog Soldiers-Woof Woof!

What's this day of rest shit? What's this bullshit? I don't fuckin' care! It don't matter to Jesus. But you're not foolin' me, man. You might fool the fucks in the league office, but you don't fool Jesus. This bush league psyche-out stuff. Laughable, man - ha ha! I would have fucked you in the ass Saturday. I fuck you in the ass next Wednesday instead. Wooo! You got a date Wednesday, baby!

Then catch the moments as they fly,
And use them as ye ought, man:
Believe me, happiness is shy,
And comes not aye when sought, man.
