Methodical hands built this jungle gym
a metal mound rising out of chalky Earth
where the children stumble as they burn
themselves trying to mount the rigid structure
Surrounded by flowers that struggle upward
out of the dry ground, bent over to one side
petals dangling limp above the thirsty soil
they strain under the merciless midday sun
Children dance happily in the dirt
their orange, pink, yellow, green and blue
shirts like a mirage of colored spots
seen after looking directly into sunlight
Their chaotic laughter seeps through
still valley air that traps the broken rhythm
of play until beat and stress are a relentless
echo reverberating and carrying inside of me
They learn in this dusty place with metal toys
their eyes trained to keep close to the floor
where a small garden of colorful dandelions
stand indefatigably upright and persistent
