Composer and Pianist, Jason Day, began studying guitar at the age of 10 and performed in various rock and jazz bands. As many young musicians did, Day fell in love with the sounds of the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, and the Velvet Underground, as well as the early 90’s grunge movement of Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins. Day attended Roane State College on a full guitar scholarship and experienced jazz and in his 2nd year, made a drastic move to the piano. He graduated in piano performance and won Roane State’s “Outstanding Musician Award.”
He moved on to the University of Tennessee Music School where he studied under Donald Brown and Jerry Coker, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in studio music and jazz. After a brief stint playing and producing music around the Chapel Hill and Raleigh, NC music scenes, he returned to the University of Tennessee jazz program as its distinguished Graduate Teaching Assistant, where he accumulated a Masters degree in jazz studies.
Day has performed all over the US and beyond, with a short stint in New York City and as the showband pianist for Carnival Cruise lines. Day currently performs with the Streamliners big band, his Brazilian based side project, the Nova Delinquents, jazz group the Chuckle Grizzly Collective, Soularium with Jason Thompson, and the Cheating Spoon.
