Daniel's Interests
|
| General | You can get a pretty good idea by checking out my news clips.
I am not as much of an otaku about a lot of these as some other folks, so please don't be disappointed that I can't discuss the finer points of, say, DC Universe continuity with you. In no particular order: Africa (esp. Ghana, Nigeria, the DRC, the Sudan, Liberia, Somalia, Angola, Mozambique, and South Africa), peacekeeping and related MOOTWs, just war theory, moral theory, law (esp. international law and jurisprudence), human rights, humanitarian intervention, development economics, American pragmatism (esp. John Dewey), punk, comic books, cooking, yoga (lapsed), weight lifting, market socialism, anarchism, tactics of nonviolence, role-playing games (newly introduced to "indie" games and liking the field) of the mostly non-computer kind, the posthuman future, cosmopolitanism, political philosophy, mind, language, feminism, liberalism and republicanism of the classical sort, blah blah blah | | Music | An off the cuff sampling: Bad Religion, Rollins Band, Rise Against, Arthur Honegger, Aphex Twin, Benjamin Britten, Transglobal Underground, Thievery Corporation, Sarah McLachlan, Bran Van 3000, Sage Francis. Can I have my eclectic Gen-Xer merit badge now? | | Movies | Dr. Strangelove, Dirty Pretty Things, Empire Strikes Back, Fight Club, The Ten Commandments, Ghost in the Shell, Pulp Fiction, Full Metal Jacket, the third Matrix movie that my friend and I postulated after seeing Reloaded and that was totally going to be about the deconstructionist notion of copies w/o originals... | | Television | Buffy, West Wing, Daily Show, Cop Rock (laugh it up), Lost (can't stop...), bunches o' anime (faves include the usual: Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, GitS: SAC, Paranoia Agent, Fullmetal Alchemist, Robotech), Family Guy, No Reservations. Too bad I don't have cable anymore. | | Books | For context, know that my wife and I are currently trying to figure out where to put another bookshelf. Some particularly influential ones: In the Footsteps of Mr. Kurtz (Wrong), Consciousness Explained (Dennett), Liberalism and Social Action (Dewey), A Problem from Hell: America in the Age of Genocide (Power), Nicomachean Ethics (Aristotle), Just and Unjust Wars (Walzer), The Man in the High Castle (Dick), Neuromancer (Gibson), Objectivity, Relativism, and Truth (Rorty), Republicanism (Pettit), Making it Explicit (Brandom), Having Thought (Haugeland), Being and Time (Heidegger), Meaning, Value, and Reality (McDowell), The Problems of Jurisprudence (Posner) | | Heroes | How to say these without sounding cheesy... Ghandi. Nelson Mandela. Ibrahim Rugova. Sergio Vieira de Mello. Raphael Lemkin. No one beyond reproach, but some who do better than most. |

About me:
I figured I'd finally fill this out, rather than just using it as a ghost account to get messages from Rosie and check out my brother's music. I'm not going to mess around with a quote or complaining that I don't know what to put here. Instead, you get basic facts. I've been in school for almost my entire life now, but teaching, researching, and doing odd tech jobs along the way; I am breathtakingly overeducated in a number of subjects of dubious utility. My current research/writing focus is peacekeeping and peace operations, particularly in Africa. I am currently scheming to get there for a while, since I am embarassed to admit that I've not been. I live outside DC with my lovely wife, who is also a wonk (but on domestic policy). I am old enough that most Fridays I spend crashing on the couch with a glass of wine and a movie but young enough that I still check the show listings just in case.
