Interests

  • General

Animation, illustration, sequential art, film direction, film production, writing articles in: psychology, medicine, and comedy. My research interests lie in the study of the placebo effect.
  • Music

My choice in music is changable, and can I no longer can say I like "this band" or "that band". I like certain songs the artists, because not everything they do is great. I like feelings that reflect how I am feeling or want to feel. I also like messages that confirm my beliefs. Music that is sexy, interesting, progressive, intelligent or creative can also be enjoyable simply through being so. I can also admire something for its emotive merit even if I dont want to feel that emotion, or dont usually feel it. My selection of music is international and goes across genres, though it is heavily littered with gothic, japanese, shock, guitar based, and progressive types.
  • Movies

..I like surreal anime directed at adults (e.g. neon genesis evangelion: the end of evangelion, Paprica). I like fantasy action films (e.g. underworld, resident evil 2) I like art house and foreign films (e.g. sante sangre).
  • Television

    ..Don't watch TV
  • Books

Mostly academic and foreign stuff. I prefer to write rather than read, if I am reading I really have to be able to learn from it, or get something from it.

About me:

I like to make artistic projects and projects related to psychology. I am eccentric.

michaelmathewsart.com is my website- though while it displays my art in a way much more to my liking than deviantart does, I put up more of my work on my DA account. click for My deviant art page (old, for the new one click on the picture above)

Life is incomprehensibly short.
Don't fear taking risks.

My artwork programmed sell death.
The name is a pun on programmed cell death, a condition in which neurons or other cells tell another to kill themselves. The work also touches on the themes of the environment, being fragmented in personality, being dysfunctional, and dead on the inside... not exactly feelings that I want to foster- but I was once taught that one way of getting people to take action is to induce fear and then give a practical way of alleviating fear. so the message is be energy efficient or suffer. An animated short film I made called Division A music video made for a band called "fanny pack" the song is called crazy bunny.

Long before a thermonuclear war can come about, we have had to lay waste to our own sanity. We begin with the children. It is imperative to catch them in time. Without the most thorough and rapid brain-washing their dirty minds would see through our dirty tricks. Children are not yet fools, but we shall turn them into imbeciles like ourselves, with high I.Q.s if possible.

"why then believe in God? Why not simply believe in man, society, the world? Why in God and simply not in human values:liberty, fraternity, love? Why add trust in God to trust in ourselves, prayer to work, religion to politics, the bible to reason, the hereafter to now? What is belief in God supposed to mean anyway? What can it mean today?"

Who I'd like to meet:

Eccentric people, normal people, and everything in-between. People that like my art!! People who dislike my art (I am often included in this group :) )!! People who enjoy watching film. People who want to be part of the film-making process. Voice actors, musicians capable of writing a soundtrack, animators, actors, graphic designers, people who are interested in sound.

Yoyo! Yes I remembers you. How's Berlin and why so far from home? I'm in New York.
  • Jul 10 2009 9:11 AM

hi ben, I am sorry, but I am not in Berlin from 12th-15th of July. So we can not meet at DarkMarket on Sunday. But it is great that you will try to stay in Berlin, so we have enough time to meet again. And yes, my mobile number is still the same. Looking forward to hear from you, all the best, Andrea

I've completed the survey. I like to stay ambiguous these days because everything is always up in the air, and things change from moment to moment.
I like to try to stay positive, even with all that is going on =P
  • Jan 6 2009 5:42 AM

Things are interesting. That's the term of the year for me. "Interesting" is such an ambiguous word. I love it.
I'm just trying to keep busy enough to stay out of trouble! ;)

Hey! How are you? You seem to be pretty productive! I can't log onto dA anymore- it does something strange to my computer each time, and I can never be on long enough to even check messages as a result.
How is life treating you these days?
  • Dec 26 2008 9:40 PM

Hi Ben, I wish you wonderful days and a very happy new year. I hope you will continue your artistic life, I wish you a lot of new and exciting projects.
Maybe will we meet next year in Berlin again? All the best for you, Andrea
  • Dec 31 2008 12:08 AM

hey! sorry about the long delay in reply, I'm rarely on this.

Yupp, I'm in first year now, and its going alright. Its a lot of work thoguh! Doing Science in UCD. Its pretty generalised at the moment but next year I will be going on to specialise a bit more in genetics, microbiology and environmental biology. Its actually all so interestesing, though its kind of funny, me doing science and not art or english, I guess.

What were your projects on? Still do that life drawing classes? I was thinking of starting again, got a sort of reknewed urge to get back into art recently, but I'm so out of practice! Its been months, if not even half a year, since I last did anything even vaguely serious in terms of art :(

I will def check out your film, sounds interesting at any rate :)

Oh and thanks about the hair, its quite a change huh? lol

So any other news?? Its been *so* long since I last saw you!

hiyaaaa poppet! deadly yeah im totally up for that! remind me tho right? x
  • Aug 14 2008 10:09 AM

Hi Ben, your German is really good! I understood everything. And I really like your art. You made progress and maybe you better should study fine arts instead of psychology. Is there a reason that you mainly deal with Asian characters in your animations? It would be fine, to see you next year in Berlin.
But I am very curious about your work, so lets stay in contact until then! Sunny greetings from Berlin, Andrea
  • Jul 26 2008 11:00 AM

    Tired? Why tired?

When are your exams? How goes the study?

You know how i prefer to evoke moods n stuff, was seeing if i could do that with colour.

The most recent ones are the ones where you can't see my face, again it creates a mood, but not directly...kinda. I think. BLEH!

    Productive instead of destructive!

What's new in world of ben,huh huh? You been recording....?
  • Apr 14 2008 12:27 AM

  • Apr 12 2008 7:30 PM

Thats crazy...glad I could assist you with the knowledge that your room is "pinkish"! Yes, I am engaged and planning the wedding for August 30th of this year. I'm trying to keep it low key...thats why I haven't written about it yet...Still trying to break in the feeling, I guess. I'm also being deployed to Iraq in October of this year. That part sucks thought, and I'm not looking forward to it at all! But I hope you are having fun with your art, music, videos, and of course...your school!
