chad's Interests
|
| General | Music, writing, music writing, artfully crafted cinema, highbrow literature, seasonal beard cultivation, the outdoors, yo-yo exercising, non-tourist traveling, adventure, napping, adventure napping, nostalgia trips, red wine, palindromes, solitude when I'm sick of people, people when I'm sick of solitude. | | Music | Anything that moves me cerebrally and physically, up to and including funk, folk, bluegrass, Afrobeat, hip-hop, trip-hop, vintage R&B/soul, jazz (no big band, new age or George Benson after he traded Wes Montgomery's throne for pop hits), jam, indie rock, classic rock, punk, post-punk, new wave, electronic, '60s schmalz-pop, non-CMT country, straight up no-need-for-hyphens rock 'n' roll and Frank Zappa, whatever he is. | | Movies | Burton, Kubrick, Gondry, Linklater, Miyazaki, Tarantino, Woody Allen, Wes Anderson, Sofia Coppola, Spike Jonze, Michael Moore, the Coen brothers and other filmmakers who make movies mostly in the interest of art. I am not, however, above the occasional dumb movie, and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is one of the best. I geek out to Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and documentaries. My brother-in-law Lance deserves an award for making our wedding video not look like it was shot by someone who has a kiosk at the mall. | | Television | Thanks to the DVD, I discriminately consume without subjecting myself to the annoyance of commercials and the proliferation of crap. Once cable companies let us purchase channels a la carte, TV will win me back. For now, I'm perfectly content watching DVDs of The Simpsons, Family Guy, That '70s Show and Robot Chicken. And yes, I'm a snob. | | Books | I usually read about music, but my literary favorites include Hunter S. Thompson, Jack Kerouac, Charles Bukowski, Walt Whitman, Ernest Hemingway (A Farewell to Arms sucks, however), J,D. Salinger, Kurt Vonnegut, George Orwell, F. Scott Fitzgerald, E.E. Cummings, Tom Wolfe and Emily Dickinson. I have a lot of unread stuff on the shelf that makes me look smarter than I really am. | | Heroes | Celebrity worship is a plague. Let's just say that if I had a book, it would be dedicated to my parents. |

About me:
Currently docked in Boise, Idaho, with my wife Erica and our two cats (debut child's scheduled release date is June 30!), I spend 40 hours a week covering arts and entertainment, the outdoors and bean burritos for the Idaho Statesman newspaper. On the moonlighting tip, I'm a regular contributor to the highly underrated fashion/pop culture mag Zink (NYC), which lets me cackle on about grime and bad hipster beer in between profiling musicians. Recently, I've also contributed to the Anthology Recordings Web site and started my first screenplay. Before moving West, I wrote for Metro Boston and other publications from my fortified compound deep in New Hampshire's White Mountains. Various examples of my writing hover in odd corners of the Interweb dating back to my college days at Ohio University. Some of it is good, some of it is bad, some of it involves school board meetings I covered whilst daydreaming about France. I am a co-founder of the Vinyl Preservation Society of Idaho, a "social recreation enterprise dedicated to communal listening enjoyment" (i.e. drinking and spinning real records with other vinyl junkies). I am a social introvert. I like the smell of rivers, freshly cut lawns and liner notes. All of it, somehow, comprises the jigsaw puzzle known as me.
