"Robert Rojas, BA '00, MA '04, is the English Department Chairperson at Westchester High School (WHS) in the Los Angeles Unified School District. His teaching career began four years ago when he was assigned there as a student teacher during his coursework in the Secondary Education program at LMU. He also works with several educational organizations, including American Education and Travel Services, Inc. as a youth program teacher strengthening English language skills for European and Russian high school students visiting Los Angeles, and EF Educational Tours as a tour group leader accompanying American high school students visiting Europe. He volunteers with several organizations, including Visitation Church as the Junior High Sunday school teacher and Confirmation Coordinator, and YMCA/LA Westchester as a film camp teacher. This summer, he was selected to attend the Freedom Writers Institute, a workshop lead by Erin Gruwell and several of the original Freedom Writers on incorporating her teaching methods and strategies in the classroom to improve student achievement.
