About me:
To be welcomed into people's homes through their TV sets and be treated like family is a unique experience. How lucky am I to do that in a community where I've spent most of my life. I was born in Miami and didn't become a true Texan until the mid 70's when my parents moved to Houston, along with everyone else's it seems, during the oil boom. They say if you've lived here most of your life you're a native Houstonian, so I guess I qualify. I grew up on the city's west side attending Frostwood Elementary, Memorial Middle and Memorial Senior High schools. Wanting to spread my wings, I crossed the Atlantic to attend college in England. One semester later, during Christmas break, I toured the University of Houston hoping to find a more expansive curriculum in Broadcast Journalism. I was home, in more ways than one. U of H left a lasting impression on me, and now I find myself there almost as often as when I had an 18 hour course load. Whether it's through charity events, fund raisers, awards ceremonies, even my own golf tournament (read more on this site), I feel a tremendous desire to give back to the University that enriched my life and literally became a spring board for my career. One of my professors, Dr. Bob Musburger, helped me land my first job as a radio traffic reporter for Metro Traffic Control about three weeks after graduation. A few months later, after much pursuasion, one of my traffic stations, Mix 96.5 hired me to be a weekend disc jockey and weekday production assistant. The nickname "Dubinique" came shortly thereafter from all the tape dubbing. I worked my way to overnight D.J., then late evenings. About that time, a traffic reporting position opened up but not in radio. KPRC-TV Ch. 2's morning show was looking for someone to do on camera traffic reporting. Yours truly auditioned, and I got the lucky break I was hoping for. The ultimate goal was to become a reporter/anchor, so I asked numerous questions and shadowed a few anchors. I would take home scripts, write and re-write. One year later, there I was, on the news desk filling in for a vacationing anchor! Not only was it a combination of timing and a bit of luck, the people along the way were pivotal. I have many to thank for the opportunities they gave me and continue to give (you know who you are). Another person who came into my world and continues to enrich it is my husband, Scott. I feel blessed to have a personal life that matches my professional one.
Who I'd like to meet:
I've had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing so many wonderful and FAMOUS people. I'm sure I'll meet tons more and when I do, I'll be sure to post them on myspace.
