   About The Hitchcocks
The Hitchcocks were formed in the late fall of 1985 at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa not by some preconceived notion of stardom, but by pure chance. Seems the DKE social chairman accidentally booked both bands for the weekend to play on Friday night. So there was one band playing in the party room and another one playing on the front porch that night. Sounds like fun, but what in the hell were we going to do for a band on Saturday night after the ball game? It was common knowledge around the House that a couple of newboys knew how to play a couple of instruments pretty damn well: Jack Massey (Nashville) the drums and B.F. Stokes (Mobile) the guitar. Actives Tim Engle (Lexington, KY) was a bass player, and myself, John Mullins (Mobile) was an aspiring guitarist. There was a band right there within the Hallowed Halls, and we didn't even know it. We also didn't know any songs.........at least not together. After some light prodding and heavy drinking, we decided we would give it a go, and we would be the band for Saturday night. So we came up with a song list, learned them, had a marathon rehearsal session, rented a P.A. system and showed up at the DKE House on Saturday night ready to play. And we did all that in about 8 hours. We even had a name: The Hitchcocks. Ed Morris (B'ham) lent his vocal talents that infamous evening, and his then girlfriend (and now wife of about 20 years) Wendy came up with the name. I must humbly admit that we rocked the house that night much to everyone's surprise. Blending catchy originals and clever covers, The Hitchcocks were soon packing the local bars, being played on college radio stations and then went on to regional popularity in the mid to late 80's. The incarnation now features founding members Mullins, Massey, and Stokes, as well as longtime bassist known only as "Earthdog."
