Benjamin Herman got his first saxophone at the age of twelve. At thirteen he was already playing on the professional club circuit. Within a few years he was appearing with different groups around the world and initiating projects of his own. His fame spread beyond jazz circles in the 1990s when he formed the groundbreaking ensemble New Cool Collective. Having made a name as soloist while still a teenager, Benjamin Herman has appeared on over a hundred records with all kinds of artists, from Candy Dulfer to Misha Mengelberg. Herman has also built a career in Holland and abroad as a composer.
With New Cool Collective as well as with his quartet , featuring Hammond organist Carlo de Wijs, guitarist Jesse van Ruller and drummer Martijn Vink, his gigs are inspired by the popular jazz of the dance floor, attracting music fans of all genres as well as jazz aficionados. At the same time he has explored the repertoire of composers such a Byard, Monk and Mengelberg..
Today Benjamin Herman is one of the most original and productive jazz musicians in the Netherlands exploring influences beyond the confines of the jazz world.
In 2005 Benjamin Herman produced a series of records, including the 7” vinyl ‘Skunkaholic’ and the 12” vinyl ‘Durban Poison’. He also won an Edison for his album ‘Heterogeneity’ (featuring Dutch avant-garde legend Misha Mengelberg), while his 2005 CD ‘The Itch’ was hailed by Dutch daily the Volkskrant as the best Dutch jazz release of the year and received four stars in Britain’s Mojo magazine. He recorded and toured with Paul Weller, programmed the three-day festival Jazz International Rotterdam, toured in Brazil, Argentina, Kenya, Russia, Britain, Canada, Ireland and Macedonia and worked on numerous projects in the Netherlands. In 2006 he received the prestigious VPRO/Boy Edgar Award and released 'The London Session' which features 80 year old British pianist Stan Tracey.
2007 saw the release of another award winning album 'Campert'. Originally written as a soundtrack for a documentary about Dutch poet Remco Campert, Herman rescored his music to a full length album featuring young Dutch pianist Gideon van Gelder (also known for his work with singer Jose James). In 2008 New Cool Collective released thier 7th album 'Out Of Office' and Herman made his 9th solo album 'Hypochristmastreefuzz', a collection of tunes written by Dutch avant-garde legend Misha Mengelberg. Herman was also voted 'Best dressed Dutchman of 2008' by Esquire magazine.
