Influences
"When I hear Billy play, I want to jump on stage and sing along! Great toe-tappin' music." Cara Luft, Singer/Songwriter (formerly of the Wailin' Jennys)
Sounds Like
"Billy Manzik is a great songwriter, right up there with Steve Earle and Ryan Adams." Michael Murphy, Supervisor, Capitol Records Mastering
Highway 61 - the 'Blues Highway' - starts in New Orleans. From Robert Johnson's crossroads in Clarksdale, Mississippi, to Bob Dylan's birthplace in Hibbing, Minnesota, it cuts clear through the centre of America. Billy’s journey began where Highway 61 officially ends - Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. This would be where his guitar-slingin’, country-singin’ mother would expose him to the wonderous world of music. He spent his formative years shyly playing guitar in his bedroom, while letting his artistic side be known through his visual art. The next few years were spent living in various spots around the world, absorbing different cultures and their respective sounds (Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Appalachia of the United States…).
A move to Calgary, Alberta would see Manzik step out into the world of songwriting and performing, and he hasn't looked back since. Currently, he has just released his first (mostly live off-da'-floor) album that was recorded at Rocky Mountain Studio with co-producers Rob Smith (Guy Davis, Little Miss Higgins) and Daniel J. Coe (Aerosmith, Tracy Bonham, The Trews). Drawing from influences as disparate as JJ Cale, Wilco, Joni Mitchell, J.S. Bach, Mr. Dressup, John Frusciante, Chris Whitley, Aretha Franklin, John Coltrane, Waylon Jennings, Edward Van Halen, Slayer, John Lee Hooker, Bill Frisell, ABBA, the man that would play flamenco guitar at the neighbourhood video shop in South Korea (this is a very long sentence - insert breath here), and the sound of the wind blowing through the leaves on a hot summer day back at his childhood home (breathe again), his sound can be described best as roots music infused with anything and everything that he’s able to imagine (and...relax).
