   About Brian Groder

ABOUT: Modern-Progressive Jazz, it’s the term I use to describe the music I play, compose and improvise. The individualistic storyline that I seek to weave with a fresh approach based upon a solid tradition spanning the straight ahead to the free-garde.

“Brian Groder brings impressive focus and impeccable chops.” Bill Meyers, Downbeat “Torque” 4 stars, Best of 2007

“Absolute musical freedom, openness and vision.” Free-Jazz blog, Netherlands

“Innovative compositions and a fat trumpet tone.” Jazz pa Svenska, Sweden

“Groder is clearly a formidable talent.” Sid Simon, Post cards from the Yellow Room

“A personal voice able to communicate a range of moods and ideas without hesitancy.” Ronald Lyles, Jazz Improv NY

“A shining light in NYC’s new jazz avant-garde.” Elliot Simon, All About Jazz-NY

“Groder’s engaging methods of combining line, texture and attack spur on (Sam) Rivers at every turn.” Bill Shoemaker, Point of Departure

“A new vision for modern jazz.” Midwest Records

“Uncompromising in his approach, Brian demands and deserves the attention of audiences who like to hear music that is not only new, but thought provoking.” Bruce Crowther, Swing2bop.com

THE MUSIC: I read too much, way too late at night. Science, history, philosophy and science fiction are all fertile grounds for my musical settings and reflected in their titles. These interests truly send me into musical directions, foundations and motifs that develop the stories I want to tell of individual perspectives and narratives. Music, I also listen too much, but that’s another quirk and joy.

“Music not only for today but also for tomorrow.” Bruce Crowther

“Music of ceaselessly fascinating possibilities.” All About Jazz

“Your new CD, TORQUE, has touched me deeply.” Charles Lloyd

INFLUENCES: The debt I owe to the Jazz Masters who’ve shaped my senses of inflection, style, grace and of course, swing is immeasurable. Not just in the notes themselves, but also in the weight of passionate stories told. The most meaningful communications engage, hold and develop.

The list of these musical giants is lovingly long and ever growing on my links page. My sincerest acknowledgment, thanks and gratitude for those mentors who have taken their time, patience, honesty, prodding and example to guide me through musical revelations. Thank you John Vanore, Dennis Sandole, Cecil Taylor, Charles Lloyd, Joanne Brackeen and Leon, my father.

EARTH SIGN: Yea, being a Capricorn, I take the long view of things. Sometimes very long, as in constantly tinkering with musical compositions and arrangements. New personal parameters of time signatures, tonal centers/key, voicing’s and/or chords keep me evolving these musical stories beyond their initial beginnings or recordings. Good or bad, my astrological prerogative allows me a long timeline without guilt or reasoning to stop.

WHERE HAVE I BEEN?: It's not been for the sake of being lazy, distracted, bothered or bewildered, I've just been scoping things/life out. Trying it on for size, ... a late bloomer: "A new theory suggests that creativity comes in two distinct types- quick and dramatic, or the careful and quiet".

WHERE AM I GOING?: Well yes, I do have a daily basic schedule in which trumpet and composing is the major focus of exploration, development, understanding and relaxation. Beyond that, is the matter of matter. Well beyond.

SOHO NYC: I find inspiration from the neighborhood canvas of doorways, sidewalks, lampposts and sides of buildings that are encrypted with Street Art. The landscape seems to change daily as additions and subtractions appear with an almost archaeological layered look. See outstanding examples from around the world.

Take care and may see you around.

Release of my first cd "Люлка" !!!
Dear friends,
I am very happy about the release of my first cd!
My purpose was to combine the trumpet with another instrument or with voice. There are some unusual duos like trumpet and recorder, trumpet and melodica, cornetto and gadulka (bulgarian folkstringinstrument) ...  Besides three important pieces from the new music repertoir you listen to some pieces written for me, others are improvised. And I am glad that 3 bulgarian songs are part of the cd.

You can find all tracks under www.ensemble-modern.com (see "cds"), some of them you can listen to under www.myspace.com/savastoianov

All the best!
sava
