Sounds Like
me and only me, of course! i'm a girl with a guitar, what else can i say?
i started playing guitar when i was 14, not because i necessarily wanted to play guitar, but because i wanted to get famous so that i could marry a rock star that will remain unnamed unless you ask me nicely and promise not to laugh. i was too stubborn to take lessons and after 2 years of blood, sweat and tears i could finally kinda sorta play something.
i went through a phase in highschool when my friends kattie and kari and i wanted to be in a punk band (boy did some terrible--but therefore good punk--songs come out of that era--"i can't sleep" was up there with the best of them). but since you can't play in a punk band by yourself, my alone time was spent writing terrible--therefore terrible love--songs about heartache that is now a mere drop in the ocean.
i used to get frustrated that i couldn't imitate anyone else's style. there's something about what other people can do that is already somehow superior to what you can do..... (i still can't quite figure that out) but i realized that the common thread through all my songs was not a curse or a shortcoming (though i still have to wonder sometimes......); it was me. it was style. and i'm stuck with it. and i know enough to be grateful and hope like hell that i don't lose it.
once upon a time my dream was to write one song and have one person hear it. that was all i needed. now it's 10 years, hundreds of songs and thousands of people later and somehow i'm not there yet. dreams are funny that way.
