Robert Mitchell, born July 24th 1970, evolved into Cyon Flare through the
love of costumes, influential art from old style movies about Josephine
Baker, Las Vegas showgirls and Liberace’s creative use of glitter and
feathers. The most interesting thing about Cyon Flare’s beginning was his
heels. It seems that he was born in “Cha-Cha Heels.”
At the age of five, he would strut all over the house in his mom’s shoes,
doing “runway” long before it was popular.
Cyon’s beginning is also rooted in house music. Like so many before him,
he took everything he felt to the clubs. His joys and his sorrows. No matter
what was going on in his life, those feelings found there way to the dance
floor, and like going to the river to be baptized, the music would save his
soul from drowning in life’s hardships.
Being inspired to perform and host, Robert moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan
where he was offered to work at the Necto Night Club, hosting and
performing, while developing his craft in costuming and connecting with the
crowd. Robert wanted to see something more colorful in the clubs so he
continued making his own costumes by hand. He would spend hours sewing
and gluing to some hot tune which was always playing somewhere in the
background and within his soul.
From Ann Arbor to Chicago
Robert would often travel with friends to Chicago for fun and to enjoy the well
grounded gay community. Robert started hanging out in the world famous
section of Chicago known as Boystown, hopping from nightlife hotspots like
Circuit and Roscoes for the music and energy. It was during these times that
Robert began meeting people like Mike M., (part owner of Circuit Nightclub)
and Box Boy Rich, (a bartender at Roscoes). It was Mike who gave Robert a
chance to showcase his talent in Chicago.
The Name
Meeting him changed his life, taking performing to the next level by starting
with creating a marketable name that would represent who Robert was as a
performer. Through picking names like Red Shiva and Blue Shiva, Robert
researched the color blue and found that there was another word for it, which
was Cyan. However, Robert wanted it to be spelled Cyon with an O and
pronounced like Scion. As a result, the name Cyon was created with meaning
and depth, and the name Flare came from the Sun: Sun Flare. It was a name
that meant Energy, the kind that only the Soul can feel.
The Music
As traveling back and forth from Ann Arbor to Chicago became more
frequent, Cyon befriended Box Boy Rich who was responsible for
introducing him to the well known producer Georgie Porgie.
It was a Superstar Sunday event at club Buzz where Cyon was asked to
perform. Georgie expressed that he was so impressed with Cyon’s energy
while performing one of his dance tracks, “Work That Body”, that he
suggested to one day collaborate with him in doing a dance track. It wasn’t
‘til months later that Cyon’s friend, DJ TimmyD, suggested to Georgie that
Cyon host one of the events at the Billboard Dance Conference. Shortly after
Cyon introduced all the artists on the program, Georgie performed the final
song of the evening, and while doing so, he past the mic to Cyon and said
“sing my chorus.” He was impressed with Cyon’s voice and said
“We’re going to make a record”.
One year later, Cyon was in the studio collaborating with Georgie Porgie on
his first dance track “Everybody Everybody”. This track is an example of the
connection that Cyon Flare is most noted for, which is dancing and feeling
the music in a spiritual way. The track was debuted March 2008 at the Winter
Music Conference in Miami, and hit number 31 on the Billboard Charts
Cyon's latest release is another collaboration called "Rise."
"Rise" is a signature song from Cyon Flare, and it will be one that he will be singing for years to come. "Rise" is an anthem for this generation speaks of how people are resilient and shall rise through any adversities.

Cyon Flare hopes to bring more light into every
community that hears the song. His goal as a performer is to use his gifts to
reach people young or old, gay or straight in the world, and to remind them
that music is still a healing balm that can lift the spirit even on the dance
floor.
