AlgemeenOur achievements: We successfully opposed the Isla Vista Seawall. We successfully opposed the development of a 269 foot long rock revetment at Campus point (although the pump house expansion was approved). We successfully appealed the Goleta beach rock revetment emergency placement in 1999 and it was ordered removed. However, two years later the County again claimed an emergency and re-installed the rocks, which are currently permitted under an emergency permit. This permit is pending the Goleta Beach Park Master Plan Draft Environmental Impact Report. Santa Barbara Surfrider continues to oppose using hard sructures to protect the park in favor of Managed Retreat. Managed Retreat is a more natural approach which will save the park AND protect the beach. We successfully opposed the construction of a Golf course at the former ARCO site on the Gaviota coast and we are in negotiations with the current owners, the Makar development corporation to preserve the site in perpetuity. We have been members of the Naples Coalition for the past 4 years. In this capacity we are working to reduce, restrict or eliminate the massive development of mega-mansions planned at the Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos ranches on the Gaviota coast. (for more information on this issue, please visit www.savenaples.org). We were the first group to perform storm drain stenciling in Santa Barbara. This involves stenciling storm drains with something that says "Don't Dump, Drains to Ocean". Eventually, the City and County of Santa Barbara shouldered the responsibility for this task. We donated $1000 to the Carpinteria bluffs, $1000 dollars to the Arroyo Hondo preservation effort, and $1000 to the "Save Ellwood" campaign. We also helped raise community awareness about those projects. We have submitted written and verbal testimony or letters of support concerning virtually every ocean water quality, coastal development, or access issue that has come before local and state agencies. -Examples; We supported HTO's Rincon Sewer project with letters to The Carpinteria Sanitary District, we sent a letter of support to County Supervisor Brooks Firestone regarding the Arroyo Hondo Steelhead Recovery Program, we sent a letter of support for increased funding for the County's Storm Water Management Program, and our members regularly give verbal testimony at Santa Barbara County and California Coastal Commission hearings, including those hearings pertaining to the Naples property, Isla Vista Parking, and the Goleta Beach seawall.
MuziekJack Johnson, Brett Dennen, The Itals, Tom Curren. We love rockin' out, and regularly feature great bands at our events.
FilmsChasing Dora, PEEL: The Peru Project, Absolute Mexico, Change the Subject, The September Sessions, Singlefin Yellow.
TelevisieNot too much into tv, but here are our current issues: LAND USE ISSUES-- THE MAKAR: After defeating the construction of a golf course on the former ARCO property during a 10-year battle, the Chapter has retained a consultant and a law firm and are in delicate negotiations with a major land conservation agency to convince the owner of that property to sell it for permanent protection. NAPLES: The chapter is working in a coalition with 5 other environmental groups to move all development at the adjacent property, Naples, to an inland portion out of the viewshed. MORE COASTAL ACCESS--"Surfrider promotes the right of low-impact, free and open access to the world's waves and beaches for all people. Surfrider acts to preserve this right of access." The chapter has been diligent in promoting this mission at Naples and Driftwoods on the Gaviota Coast as well as Jalama. UCSB ELLWOOD HOUSING DEVELOPMENT: UCSB unveiled it revised Long-Range Development Plan Amendment which includes construction of 217 faculty housing units and 151 student housing units on lands bordering ecologically sensitive creeks and wetlands and near the Devereux Slough in Goleta. BEACH ISSUES-- NO BUTTS LEFT BEHIND CAMPAIGN: The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department project addresses the problem of cigarette butt litter in our county. In California, an estimated 4,125 tons of cigarettes are discarded annually. Cigarette butts are the most common item collected during beach clean-ups. Call 681-5407 or e-mail jessica.henn@sbcphd.org for more information GOLETA BEACH SEAWALL: The placement of a rock seawall to stop erosion at Goleta Beach County Park adjacent to UCSB has been a controversial issue. Local groups are currently seeking alternatives to coastal armoring which has been proven to have devastating effects over the long term to the sandy beach. WATER QUALITY MONITORING: The Santa Barbara Chapter was instumental in encouraging Santa Barbara City and County to implement a formal ocean and creek water quality monitoring program in mid 1980's. Today both these agencies conduct weekly sampling. County Ocean Water Quality Monitoring Program, and City of Santa Barbara Creek Water Quality Improvement Program. ISLA VISTA PARKING: The parking problem in East Isla Vista (caused by the high cost of parking at UCSB) has prompted the County plan to require residential parking permits on all I.V. residential streets. This plan when implemented would severely restrict public beach access to popular surf breaks.

Info over mijzelf:
Surfrider Foundation was founded in 1984 by Glen Hening, Lance Carson and Tom Pratte, and the Santa Barbara Chapter of Surfrider Foundation was created in 1992 by a dedicated group of surfers and beach enthusiasts who wanted to make sure that the beaches they enjoyed so much would be preserved for future generations.
Wie ik zou willen ontmoeten:
Ocean Enthusiasts who want to get involved and make a difference. This can be done by volunteering to help out at events, writing letters to the County Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission and California Coastal Commission, or by donating money to our cause.
