MATT GARCIA, CITY COUNCILMAN?
I was skeptical. The young candidate always loses. What experience are they bringing to the table, after all? Shouldn't City Councilmen be old, gray haired folks who like long meetings that hold all of the excitement of a late night infommercial?
Matt Garcia knows the allure of the streets. Having relatives caught up in the gang life, he knows his life could've went either way. But he made the right decisions. He's talked with young people trying to get them to follow the path he's chosen.
Matt tells me that he can counter his biggest drawback, lack of experience, by doing his homework. He can access the same sources of info as his competitors and yet bring a new perspective to issues because he's in touch with a demographic that has been underrepresented on the council.
Garcia has spoken to candidates who've run before. He's spoken with Gary Falati and current Councilman Jack Batson. He's reached out and made contacts throughout Fairfield.
One thing drew me to Garcia is he seems to be cut in the postpartisan mold that Gov. Schwarzenegger spoke of recently. He's not a Republican or Democrat. He doesn't get bogged down with issues that really aren't relevant in a nonpartisan race for City Council.
I found that I couldn't be a Democrat because I can't hold to Democratic orthodoxy. (Also, I've got a spine.) I'm for what works no matter who's idea it is. And I see that in Matt Garcia. He wants to do the things that will make Fairfield better no matter who gets the credit.
And believe me, I was concerned because let's face it, we don't live in a vacuum here. The growth wars have divided this city for a long time. But I'm not going to have a knee-jerk response to developers and think they're all out to screw us just to make a profit. Nor do I think slow growth proponents want Fairfield to never grow and shrivel away.
Garcia has received backing by the Yarbrough family and a check from the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce. While I think it shows the faith they have in this young man, it can work as a double edged sword. It's why I asked him about his independence after his phone call with Councilman Mraz. Candidates run as blocks all the time. Batson, Marilyn Farley and John English ran as 'smart growth' candidates. Once in office, English grew more and more independent. So while it doesn't bother me that Garcia may share the ideas of colleagues, my question was for those who might see him (especially because of his youth) as a pawn.
I think he answered the question of his independence very well.
Matt is exuberant. He's anxious to talk about the issues he cares about. Just when you think his confidence is about to spill over into arrogance, he pulls back and talks about how blessed he is.
Another thing I liked about Matt was that he said if he were caught up in a situation similar to Councilman Frank Kardos', that he would step down. He was clear that he didn't want to comment specifically on Kardos but that he wanted to say that he holds himself to a high standard of conduct. And after Fairfield has been through what its been through as far as felony arrests for Councilmen, it was a positive thing to hear.
If he were elected, he certainly would bring youth and ethnic diversity to the Council. And I don't believe in diversity for diversity's sake. I think he would bring new perspectives to the council. He's at least worth a good look and not simply blown off because of his date of birth.
When I was 21, I was concerned about getting my drink on. It was all about partying all weekend when I was Matt Garcia'a age. The fact that he puts himself out there as a role model and seeks an important decisionmaking position like Councilman means he's at a level of maturity beyond most of his peers.
You can say I was impressed.

This is big time. For those of you who haven't had the opportunity to meet Matt and chat with him, this piece will give you a taste of his enthusiasm, his ideas and his dedication.
I'm telling you this guy is on the move and he's worth your consideration. I have no doubt he will be on the Council. If not this time, then he'll make it next time.
I've always been intrigued by the younger candidates because I've felt city government needs young blood. New ideas. A new perspective. But I've also always known the young candidate was roadkill. The majority of voters are older and there's no way they were voting for someone young enough to be their grandkid.
I think Matt changes that because he's earned a lot of people's respect. Former Mayor Gary Falati and Councilman John Mraz believe in Matt Garcia. The Chamber of Commerce cut Matt a check so business has decided he's a winner.
Matt Garcia and Chuck Timm can help revitalize Fairfield.

There are foundational cornerstones for the economic success of any population, and we must ensure they are in place for the emerging Latino majority in Solano County:
1. Access to jobs at every level for our Hispanic workforce.
2. Entrepreneurial programs for Latino business owners, on how to effectively grow their businesses.
3. Access to capital for growing Latino-owned businesses.
4. Access to political power and representation through more Latino elected officials.
5. Access to education, critical for long-term success. This includes opportunities for Latino youth to obtain higher education; education for young adults about skills that are applicable in today's marketplace; and education for experienced workers, who need the new skills their industries demand.
6. Community programs to keep our youth on the right track, out of trouble and off the streets.
Each of these foundational cornerstones requires support, guidance and leadership from many individuals. This week voters in Fairfield took a huge step in adding a key individual to the City Council, Matt Garcia. Matt will help shape Fairfield’s future and be instrumental in developing much needed solutions for our community. At 21 years of age Matt is the youngest City Council elected official in Fairfield’s history. Matt is already a positive role model for our youth and for our Hispanic population. He demonstrated to our entire Solano community what Cesar Chavez often stated --SI, SE PUEDE!

FAIRFIELD -- The youth that live in Fairfield can always be found in two parts of this city: Westfield Mall and Edwards Theatre. There is little to none when it comes to entertainment in Fairfield. According to students that attend Fairfield, Armijo, and Rodriguez High School, the youth are growing very bored with this and are searching for alternatives to keep them busy. This sometimes means crime and other related activity, which are both damaging and endangering this city. The crime rates have been steadily rising because of a lack of entertainment.
"Kids have nothing to do anymore. Someone needs to give these kids something to do," Robert Elleck, 57 year old Fairfield resident said.
This has been a growing concern among adults of Fairfield who have been brainstorming on ideas for entertainment to provide to the youth. Matt Garcia, a Fairfield Councilman, is the youngest councilman in California who is only in his early 20s. His primary focus is on the youth and he is continually working on new projects.
Patrick Funtanilla, President of The Funtanilla Organization, is a former Fairfield High graduate who has created an exciting new form of entertainment for the youth of this city and is in the works of being launched in the month of April of this year. Funtanilla has been meeting with top officials of Fairfield to make this a reality. He has received approvals from Mayor Harry T. Price, Councilman Matt Garcia, and various school officials such as FSUSD Superintendent Steven Goldstone. He has been closely working with city planner, Sean Quinn.
Wil Cason, star of 'Pass-it-On', said, "I support all the efforts Mr. Funtanilla has put into this project. He clearly knows what the youth wants."
Details of this new form of entertainment have yet to be released, but does promise to be the biggest thing to ever hit Fairfield. The youth is expected to enjoy it. According to city officials, thousands are projected to be in attendance. This can be the exact thing that will unite the youth of Fairfield.
"I guarantee that this will make history. This is exactly what the city of Fairfield needs. Thanks to all who have helped me," Patrick Funtanilla said.
Funtanilla has partnered with Causmic Events President, Deryk Dee.
Deryk Dee is also the Vice-President of The Funtanilla Organization and has been hard at work with this project as well.
Until this plan is in affect, the city will wait in anticipation. Fairfield Police will be monitoring the streets for any youth criminal related activity. Updates on this will continue as the story develops.
