what on earth are my influences? it's hard to tell (and probably not important anyway...) the other day i was on youtube and found an old paul mccartney amateur video of "step inside love", with a young cilla black singing. i've never much liked cilla, but this was sweet and the quitar work was quirky and a bit 1960s parisian. anyway, that's a song i liked; innocent pop music that breaks into a slightly rousing, touching chorus. other old faves include mott the h's 'all the young dudes' (probably the greatest song ever) and the small faces' 'tin solider' ( take a look at the youtube clip with p.p. arnold as the backing singer, she's remarkable and the clip is delightful, what a wonderful mod band they were). plus i kind of liked earth, wind and fire. new faves: well, mostly just radiohead and some of the wonderful dance music by underworld; since our old friends the afghans broke up, there isn't much else that comes close.
here are paul and young cilla...
here are 4 songs i put together (out of 5) at a small studio run by kim sampson in st kilda, melbourne, in 2005/06.
3 of them are rewrites of older songs from a group i used to be in a long time ago. the fourth - "music for the afternoon" - is new(ish). my old friend john statham plays electric guitar on one of them, "music for the circus": he wrote the guitar line, too. i composed and played the rest: mostly keyboards, bass and acoustic guitar (left-handed). we used a drum machine, as if you couldn't guess. they're not finished, quite: about 80% done, i guess.
i'm an english professor, with little spare time to play and write music these days (or any days). but these songs seemed kind of okay, maybe a little old-fashioned but i hope sweet and interesting and good to listen to.
