OUR MISSION

The Petersen Automotive Museum Foundation is dedicated to the preservation, collection and interpretive study of the automobile and its influence on American life and culture, using Los Angeles as the prime example. The Petersen Automotive Museum was recently named the premier automotive museum in the United States by the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and Time Magazine.

Founded by Margie & Robert E. Petersen, the Museum opened its doors in June 1994, as an extension of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. In 2000, the Petersen Automotive Museum separated from the National History Museum and was established as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit public benefit organization, governed by a Board of Directors.

Over the past fourteen years, the Museum has focused on the interpretive study of the automobile and its effect on the culture of California. Encompassing more than 300,000 square feet, its exhibits and lifelike dioramas feature over 150 rare and classic cars, trucks and motorcycles. The Museum's three floors of permanent and rotating exhibits trace the history of the automobile. Visitors are invited to walk through, not by, dioramas and displays and experience settings of early Los Angeles and its automotive history. Over 150,000 people visit the Museum each year. The Museum's greatest mission is education and more than 500 students come to the Museum every week on school field trips and other outings. The Museum's educational initiatives are designed to help the public learn about history and social studies, science and technology, math and visual arts all through the window of an automobile.

Our vision for the future includes the creation of an archival research library that makes the Museum's treasured collections and related materials more accessible to scholars and the general public. As it continues into the twenty first century, the Museum is committed to increasing its collections through strategic acquisitions that embody automotive milestones and accomplishments, as well as expanding its robust slate of educational programs and projects to better reach out to schoolchildren, adults, families and educators.

OUR EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

.. The Education Department’s aim is to build community by being an educational resource for local schools, institutions, organizations and groups, facilitating life-long learning, growth and a lasting relationship between the public and the Petersen Automotive Museum.
