Info over mijzelf:
THIS SITE IS MAINTAINED BY A FRIEND OF JOSEPH'S; HE IS BUSY ON THE STREET, OR IN THE SUBWAY, DRAWING, AND HAS NO TIME FOR SUCH INTER-CONNECTIVE ACTIVITY.
A bit about Joseph as was written in Time Out New York, August of 2006:
A New York native who copied cartoon characters as a kid, Griffith was sidetracked for years by a descent into homelessness, which began in 1986 when a car collided head-on with his bicycle, putting him in a hospital for two months. [He was thereafter homeless for 20 years living on the streets of New York.] In May of 2005 He finally found a stable place to stay thanks to Common Ground, a housing organization that runs the building he [currently] lives in. —Time Out
He started selling his drawings in 2002, while still living on the street. "I drew some pictures, put them on cardboard and just started selling from Day One." Resurrecting his childhood skill was an instant success and a result of seeing others profiting from selling their own wears around him. It wasn't long before collectors of his drawings accumulated different variations of his most common themes. They consist of "Beem Up Dog" his most famous (a white dog engulfed in a shooting ray descending from a hovering unidentified flying object); "NY Cene" which usually involves subdued elevated-subway trains, occupied by a dotted, docile bunch of silhouetted figures (typically one hatted fellow aboard). Buildings, classic NYC style architecture, lay witness behind in distinct juror fashion; "U.F.O. Activity" can be with or without subways half flying off the tracks, but will always include some form of extraterrestrial attack; "Car Love," a creation of his own subconscious, is a dual scene. On one side, a lonely dog-eared car with Heart as driver, opposite, dangle oneway only tin-can phones decorated in heart logo...among other recurring themes.
Each series, sometimes titled, frequently not, is always anew. He revives repetition with a skewed perspective, and brilliant colors, that enliven and inspire an addition to the collection.
"Griffith's depictions of UFOs attacking New York are both unsettling and oddly endearing, combining naivete and an evocation of subconscious fears. His crayon drawings offer a splash of color—and a taste of intergalactic folk art—to strap hangers running for the train. Comical and endearing, these gems are certainly some of the best 'subway' art in the city, and over the past five years, he's built up a following; he usually sells ten a night" says TONY. [Correction: Joseph uses colored pencils and a black magic marker for the outlines.]
