Interview :: DJ Lee Thornhill by Rick Dunn
EDGE Community Editor Thursday Sep 28, 2006
DJ Lee Thornhill
During Provincetown's annual Carnival Week in August, DJ Lee Thornhill's dance card is pretty much full. For the past few years, he has provided the soundtrack to the Carnival Week boat cruise and The White Party at Delft Haven.
EDGE checked in with Thornhill, who just returned from Folsom Street Fair.
How was The Folsom Street Fair? "Folsom Street Fair was incredible. The highlight of the weekend was the Real Bad party. Not only was there an amazing crowd, energy, space and music at this event, but Real Bad is unique by spotlighting an unknown DJ with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the community. After a weekend of sunny warm weather and the debauchery of the Fair itself, Real Bad was the perfect climax- so to speak."
I read that you jump-started your DJ career seven years ago? Why music? "Music is hard-wired to my emotions and has always been a passion for me. I enjoy pushing my limits and DJing was the obvious next step. It's also a great feeling to share the enjoyment of music with others."
What DJs or re-mixers are doing it for you now? For a club gig, especially T-Dance vocals, the Freemasons are doing some great re-mixes. I also enjoy almost anything re-mixed by Tony Moran, Scotty K, or Rosabel. I should mention that Susan Morabito was my first major DJ influence when starting. For my own casual listening, I tend to be more esoteric and enjoy re-mixers such as D-Formation, Thomas Penton, Saeed Younan and pretty much anything under the Stereo Productions label."
True or False: Lee Thornhill's music is flagger friendly? "True "
Do ever flag? "Nope. Did I say no? But I love those who do "
For those who may not have had the opportunity to hear you spin, you have posted several sets on your myspace page. Do you think those sets are a good representation of what people can expect on Sunday? "Yes, the sets from Provincetown Carnival would reflect the energy. The difference being that Carnival was outdoor at sunset, so I would adjust the mood a bit while the sun went down with all the colors in the sky."
You appear to have inherited the annual Provincetown Carnival Week boat cruise. Does spinning on a boat present any special challenges? "No challenges for the musical journey aspect, as it's quite a wonderful setting and experience. But, the technical challenges are abundant as the equipment is mobile and there always seems to be a glitch with cables, power etc. At the most recent event I had to wipe down the CDs because of the humid salty air... and would cross my fingers when hitting play."
What's the day job that supports the music career? "I'm a hospital administrator in the Harvard system."
Did anyone ever tell you that you look like that porn star Konrad?"Perhaps he's my evil twin? Tell him hi for me "
Following this Sunday's gig at Rumor, what's next for you, musically? "I would like to do some more gigs, especially if it's a fun crowd I was doing several out-of-town nights, but the gay club world continues to evolve and many big room spaces have closed or changed their format making good gigs hard to come by. Promoters and club owners can certainly give me a call.
