I was cruelly euthanized at the Indiana City of Rushville Animal Shelter on Monday November 12, survived in a cooler for 4 days until rescued.
I will fight against animal cruelty in whatever form it takes, especially cruelty sanctioned by the very shelter's who are supposed to provide a refuge for helpless animals. Shelter's that refuse to provide veterinary care and inhumanely euthanize animals are guilty of a crime, it will not stand. Together we can bring shelter's like Rushville to their knees. We will expose their actions to the harsh light of public opinion, we will stand on their street corners, we will flood their email accounts and phone lines, we demand shelter reform!
While we have forced the City of Rushville to reinstate Jamie as shelter assistant, we have yet to attain JUSTICE. The City has essentially muzzled Jamie, they will not muzzle us.
Our long battle is paying off, the new Mayor, Merv Bostic is implementing positive change. Under Jamie's advice they have given the okay to vaccinate shelter animals, worm and provide flea treatment. Thanks to volunteer efforts we have kept the shelter from killing since mid January. Now when euthanasia is necessary it is done by a contracted mobile veterinarian. We are thankful to all who helped put the pressure on Rushville to stop the inhumane killing and cruel treatment of shelter animals. We are still fighting to bring justice to those who committed criminal acts prior to the change in administration. We and the USAP demand that the City of Rushville Police uphold Indiana State Cruelty Laws, and arrest former Dog Warden Jack Hill and Mayor Bob Bridges on felony animal cruelty charges. Thank You

UPDATE! Carter was left on a chain and starved by his owner. He has a neck wound from the chain and weighs a mere 24lbs. He is a pittie mix and is extremely urgent! Carter died in the shelter awaiting vet care. The city of Rushville Shelter does not provide vet care. We help these poor souls with volunteer money and donations. We were working on finding the money to help Carter, but we didn't do it in time. If you would like to donate to the vet fund we would appreciate it. Franklin County Animal Clinic.

The Leland Mississippi Shelter is in such dire need that Jamie and I have decided to make an emergency run from Rushville Indiana to Leland Mississippi. The United States Animal Protection, a national animal rights group is helping with the van, vaccines and more, the volunteer's at ARRF are giving us a place to stay overnight and chipping in towards gas. The situation:Puppies have been freezing to death outside, rats are eating the dog food, sewage backs up into the shelter. The City of Leland owns the building but will not even provide food for the animals. The 4 volunteers have exhausted themselves physically and financially. In addition to the shelter being overflowing, a hoarder is willing to give up the 42 dogs he has. Leland is in dire circumstances! We will carry dog food, vaccines, tools to make necessary shelter repairs and provide womanpower to coordinate a weekend rescue effort. We will also be documenting the conditions at the shelter and the many starving strays in Leland.
UPDATE!
Today, the President of the United States Animal Protection, Dawn Bechtold, placed a call to the Mayor of Leland. I'm happy to say that Mayor Brooks was finally convinced that the City of Leland needed to step up and do something about their "shelter". Mayor Barbara Brooks had agreed to send County inmates out to finish clearing brush and overgrowth around the shelter, continue to keep the weeds down, and address the rat population. She also agreed to improve the actual housing facility for the dogs. You can bet we will be following up on this to make sure she keeps her word.
The trip to Leland was a two phase operation. First to get there and offer immediate assistance and Two to push for valid shelter reform. Without the second part we are only a bandaid.
A large part of our success was the media attention that we got while there, no community wants to hear that it took "outsiders" to come in and fix their problem. In addition to gathering documentation and photos that they prefer not to see flying around on the internet or television. We all know that public opinion can work wonders.
Thank you all for your help and support in making valid and lasting changes at the Leland Shelter. Believe me, if the Mayor does not hold to her word, we will issue a call to action. Right now we are offering encouragement and offering assistance to make the necessary changes.
If you haven't seen the photos yet from our trip the slide shows are below.

Leland Dogs Saved
....
Tragic! There are a total of 3 hoarders that we know of in Leland. One is slowly releasing dogs and allowing ARRF volunteers to vaccinate, we saved many from there this weekend. Another hoarder had died a year ago, his brother in law was "taking care of the dogs", when we discovered the situation only two dogs were left, the other 28 died. At first the "owners" claimed not to be responsible for the two remaining dogs featured in the video, but refused to allow us to take them. Only when money was offered did they agree, they never looked back but began fighting over the $100.

this has got to be the most ridiculous matter that i have ever come across. its an animal shelter and its part of life that a dog has to die once in a while. As a resident of Rush county, i think i stand for alot of people when i say we laugh at you people and are tired of all this bs. Animals die every day and it's not a big deal. There's a freezer out there for all u people that get on here and pretend to be a dog talking, thats gotta be the dumbest thing ive ever heard of. theres no need to make a big deal out of a dog not dyin in a freezer. it's actually pretty funny if you think about it. It'd be much simplier if they'd just let them shoot the dogs. Much simplier and will get the job done for sure. i shot a coyote yesterday, and actually, i think it was probably Gabby's cousin. It's people like you that make a big deal about animals that makes the fur market go down, and the harsh laws for the hunters and trappers. Rush county is a farming community and many of us and many of your ancestors hunted and trapped as a means of life. mind ur own business and quit worryin about a dog that "supposedly" didn't die in a freezer. next time you are all out at the courthouse we're all gonna bring some dead dogs down there for ya. well gabbby dont choke on your bone or we'll be hearin about that next.

UPDATE:
The City of Rushville has initially complied with the USAP request for open records. The records received so far are incomplete at best, no intake or outcome records for almost a year! Euthanasia records are hand written with no signature, according to their own records animals were underdosed by one third the amount for proper euthanasia. They have yet to provide copies of euthanasia license which leads us to wonder if Jack Hill was even licensed to euthanize animals. The most stunning revelation has been our request for records pertaining to the police investigation. According to the Police Department they have no records, NONE! Now, either they didn't carry out the investigation (but we have Mayor Bridges on video and official press releases with the investigation conclusion), or documents were destroyed upon the change in administration. We will not stop until we get to the bottom of this and Justice is served.
UPDATE:
The United States Animal Protection has filed a formal request for open records regarding the Rushville Animal Shelter. According to state law, the City has 7 days to comply. All records pertaining to intake/outgoing, euthanasia, budget, adoptions etc must be provided. The USAP is demanding the arrest of former Dog Warden Jack Hill, and former Mayor Bob Bridges, on felony animal cruelty charges. The USAP is also demanding that the City of Rushville Police uphold Indiana State Animal Cruelty Law. I do believe the truth is about to come out.
Please let Rushville's Mayor Merv Bostic, know where you stand. Tell Mayor Bostic that the world is watching. E-mail him at: mayor@cityofrushville.com. Telephone him at (765)932-3735. Offer solutions and encourage change. Demand that pound assistant Jamie Glandon stay re-instated at the Rushville Animal Shelter, without harassment or fear of reprisal. Without intervention, there is grave concern about how this chapter will end for companion animals interred at the Rushville Animal Shelter. Please read and sign the petition at: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/gabby-was-euthanized-lived-four-days-in-a-freezer.
Meet Gabby, she is a 4 month old Mastiff/Shepherd mix who was euthanized on Monday November 12. Four days later shelter worker Jamie Glandon went into the walk in cooler to dispose of a body, when Gabby raised her head. Buried neck deep, in a barrel, under other dead animals.
Jamie immediately removed Gabby from the cooler and called the Head Dog Warden, Jack Hill, she was told to take the dog to a local vet and have her euthanized again. Jamie refused, instead phoned the vet to have Gabby examined. Gabby now is safely into rescue and under veterinary care.
Jamie has been placed on administrative leave for her courageous and compassionate act. She could lose her job and face potential criminal charges, all for saving a puppy's life.
It gets worse. This is the third failed euthanasia reported at the shelter since September. First, a border collie who had to be euthanized three times before death resulted. Second, a litter of 3 black lab puppies had to be euthanized multiple times before death resulted.
The euthanasia procedure at the Rushville Animal Shelter is INHUMANE. Instead of finding a vein, as a veterinarian would do, the dog instead is injected directly into the heart. There is no sedation given, and death is slow and painful, the animal fully aware. In the two previous instances of failed euthanasia the dogs weren't even given the dignity of being removed from the piles of other dead animals, simply injected where they lay.
Jamie officially filed complaints with the Mayor's office on the previous incidents, nothing was done. Now Jamie is being vilified in her own community for speaking out, and taking action.
We are raising money, awareness and some hell to support our friend Jamie, get shelter procedures changed and protect Gabby! Please help, become Gabby's friend, spread the word, sign the petition, email us your contact information for another Rally for Reason in Rushville Indiana.
In the words of Gabby:
My name is Gabby and I was dropped off at the Rushville Indiana Animal Shelter because my owners didn't want me. I remember that day like it was yesterday. My person grabbed my leash and collar and walked me to the car. I was soooo excited! I was going to get to go on a car ride!! Yippie!! We drove up one street and down the other. I had my head sticking out the window with the cold winter breeze blowing my ears up. And then it happened. I saw this run down shack of a building with the words "Animal Shelter" written on the side with a big white box setting outside the door. I asked myself, "What is an animal shelter"? I soon found out and little did I know that big white box was going to be where they threw my body after they killed me.
I lay four days under a pile of other dead animals, no food or water. Then I saw a bright light and for a minute thought I was going over Rainbow Bridge to find peace at last. Instead it was my hero, Jamie Glandon, who came to rescue me, give me a bath, warm me, hold and comfort me until I quit shaking, and take me to the doctor. Now, I am safe in rescue but the vet bills have been high and my savior Jamie faces trouble for her decision to save me. Won't you be our hero and help?
Wie ik zou willen ontmoeten: Each and every person that has supported Jamie and I through our battle for justice. The members of the United States Animal Protection, who have firmly stood by my side. Thank you all!
After you've finished here, you may like to hear this folk-carol on myspace... Poem 230 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (see my blog for details): CHRISTMAS SUNG SIMPLY
As gospellers have said, Beneath signalling skies, On land dusty to tread, A trough in a stable Was the strawy first-bed Of a divine baby - The forgiving Godhead.
A season for new hope - There then and here now; The yuletide of goodwill - There then and here now.
In respect of this chance, Beneath bright or dark skies, Faith's the star that we glance Attending Christ's churches And trying to enhance, With singing and ritual, Our God-loving stance.
After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem sung on myspace...
Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001
Where traditions are not so rare; Sea, country and works scent the air; A multitude of monuments, Planted tubs and patterned pavements.
The longish pedestrian malls; The remnants of defensive walls; Historic buildings are a gauge Of the respect for heritage.
Wheat, rape and pines in the fields; Estuaries guarded by shields; Long sandy beaches and wide scenes; Romantic-ruin go-betweens.
Rivers in parts licked by trees, Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries, And crossed by practical delights - Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.
Fine churches headed at Durham; Football kits ad infinitum; Kept castles - one for study; Masonry behind masonry.
And, with moulding-works out that way, It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?
