Don Scott & Michael Herring Present: Peripheral Vision
Don Scott’s Out of Line and Michael Herring’s Vertigo are joining forces to form Peripheral Vision, a quartet showcasing their recent discography and both leaders’ modern jazz compositions. They will be joined by Toronto saxophone great, Trevor Hogg - and on drums, from both Vertigo and Out of Line, Nick Fraser - "Fraser not so much plays the drums as hurls himself whole body and soul against skin and metal... truly talented." (Bill Stunt, CBC Radio). This amalgamated Canadian super-group is promoting the CD release of Herring’s second recording, Dark Materials featuring New York alto saxophonist, David Binney - the follow up to the critically acclaimed “Coniferous Revenge” (one of All About Jazz New York’s Top 5 debut albums of 2006) - as well as Scott’s lauded debut, Out Of Line - “Balancing the cerebral with the visceral... Out Of Line speaks with a voice distinctive enough to make it a recommended debut from a guitarist from whom more, no doubt, will be heard” (John Kelman, All About Jazz).
Long-time collaborators Michael Herring and Don Scott have found yet another creative outlet for their music - a synergy between their strong musical personalities and their complimentary writing styles. “Unusual instrumental colours, carefully composed rhythmic structures and catchy-but-offbeat melodies” (J.D. Considine, The Globe & Mail) characterize the music they are each bringing to this ambitious new project. Toronto based Herring and Scott have spent time living in New York in recent years and now continue to bring the energy and fire of New York's innovative jazz scene back to a Canadian audience.
Don Scott's Out Of Line
Out of Line, introducing Don Scott, is full of infectious modern jazz grooves and rich harmonic textures with edge-of-your-seat improvising. On this debut album the Toronto guitarist leads a quartet through ten original compositions propelled by a rhythm section that navigates the shifts between classic and modern jazz with groovy elements like jungle and rock, exhibiting a highly developed rhythmic sensibility. Fused by catchy yet quirky melodies and imaginative solos, the interplay of saxophone and guitar take the lead, while the rhythm section cooks up an unpredictable palate of support. Bringing to mind other trend setters, such as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Turner, David Binney, Jim Black, and Dave Douglas, Out of Line takes an organic and interactive approach to playing sophisticated modern jazz, creating a spirited and dynamic listening experience.

Don Scott BIO
Guitarist and composer Don Scott has emerged as one of Toronto’s fresh new talents. His unique sound and approach to different styles of music is being sought after by musicians and audiences throughout Canada, the US and abroad.
Notably, Don has recorded and toured with Michael Herring's Vertigo featuring New York saxophonist, David Binney, performed head-to-head with legendary jazz-reggae guitarist Ernest Ranglin, toured with British reggae legend Brinsley Forde (of Aswad), and Jason Wilson & Tabarruk, as well as recording and touring with his own projects. Don has attended the International Jazz Workshop at the Banff Centre for the Arts, where he forged many relationships with musicians from around the world. There, he had the opportunity to play and record a concert with Chris Potter and also share the stage with Jim Black, Dave Douglas, Django Bates, Kenny Werner, Ari Hoenig, and Johannes Weidenmuller. In Toronto, he has performed with such Toronto mainstays as Kevin Turcotte, Kirk MacDonald, John McLeod, Dave Restivo, Mike Murley, William Carn, Tara Davidson, Nick “Brownman” Ali, Melissa Stylianou, and many more.
Don Scott released his critically acclaimed debut, Out Of Line, in 2007. Don also co-leads Peripheral Vision, God’s Gift to Yoda, and Run Stop Run, and performs in many musical projects in Toronto including Michael Herring's Vertigo, Loitering Heroes, and The Offbeat.
Don Scott is a graduate of the University of Toronto’s Jazz Performance program, where he studied with Lorne Lofsky and Roy Patterson, and he has since become an integral part of a vibrant new wave of Toronto musicians. In 2008-2009 Don will be splitting his time between New York and Toronto in order to study with Ben Monder, David Binney, Donny McCaslin, and Adam Rogers, with generous support from the Canada Council for the Arts.
