Held on the beautiful Hawaiian island of Kaua’i, the KMF has grown steadily over the last 7 years to become one of the best kept secrets in the music business today, giving its attendees unprecedented access to some of the most successful songwriters and A&R executives working in the business today.
The brainchild of ex-MIT physicist Rich McSheehy, the festival started in a most unusual place; a novelist’s convention, where Rich was attending. After moving to Kaua’i to work for the US Military, Rich decided to pursue writing a novel in his spare time, and attended the Maui Writers’ Conference to hone his craft and get some inspiration. Well, as many in the field of art can tell you, inspiration comes in many places, and not always the kind you think you’re going to get! While attending, he thought to himself “This format would work great for songwriters; I wonder if there is anything like this out there for them?” Upon discovering that there was none, Rich decided to start one by himself; while that alone may seem like a tremendous undertaking, it is all the more amazing when you consider that Rich was not, and still isn’t a musician or songwriter! Through perseverance and careful planning, he somehow managed to bring industry heavyweights BMI and Gibson in as initial sponsors, and the KMF was born!!
Over the past 7 years, many things have changed; our location, our staff, even our board; most notably after our 4th year, when Rich and his wife Push decided to move away to Ireland so that Rich could resume work on his novel, which had taken a backseat to running the festival. The reins were then taken over by the very capable Jerry Brocklehurst, himself an astute businessman and excellent musician, who has guided the festival through the very successful last 3 years
One thing however has not, and will never change…The Song.
This festival is, and always has been, about helping aspiring songwriters to write a better song, to find the words to express those most private and personal feelings in a way that can touch others; everything else is frosting on the cake.
I invite you to check out our website www.kauaimusicfestival.com and see for yourself.

To the KMF board members and staff who worked hard to make this year's festival a success ... THANK YOU! And to all the industry pros that gave generously of their time... THANK YOU! It was awesome, and I'm looking forward to next year (minus the stress of the song competitionm of course).
And to all you aspiring songwriters... you should definitely consider this conference. It's a great venue for networking as well as having opportunities to spend lots of quality time with the pros.
So, until next year ... just a couple things: 1) Am I the only one who did not figure out that "Sweet Suzie McNeil" was in our presence (www.myspace.com/suziemcneilmusic)? I finally figured out who she was while on the plane back home; I actually shared a cab with her to the conference from the airport and from that moment on I kept thinking I knew her from somewhere --- I could kick myself for not going up and simply asking her where I had seen her before; Oh well ... lost opportunity; and 2) if you'd like to hear my song "I'll Find A Way" song by Tim Buppert from Nashville, I've posted it at www.myspace.com/mereich.
KMF was amazing this year but then again it has been an amazing treat every year. Huge thank you to Jerry, Katherine, Mike and all the KMF staff and voluteers. Thank you also for allowing me to bring the workshop about NSAI to the Festival again this year it is greatly appreciated. To all the old friends I got to see and the new ones made, Aloha and Mahalo.
