Imagine being set upon by a troupe of trained circus monkeys who distract you with their trickery before diving under your clothes and commandeering your limbs against your will. Whilst your body writhes about uncontrollably, your mind becomes strangely detached, offering up profound insights in to the true nature of things - and you find yourself powerless to resist.
The Alternative music genre was conceived to cater to emerging sounds that don't fit neatly into conventional boxes, and the music of King Farook is a real embodiment of this ideal. It draws individual threads from Funk, Urban, Rock, Pop, Soul, R'n'B, House and Latin, and weaves them together into an intricate and vibrant fabric of sound - one that speaks a familiar language while saying something totally unique. But it's their knockout show and impressive musicianship that's earned them the reputation amongst fellow musicians as the live band to see.
Having formed back in 2006 as a 5-piece, King Farook quickly built a strong following in the Sydney live scene. They won the 2006 Epic Sydney Performers Challenge and went on to release their debut self-produced album Land of the Horny to a sold-out Annandale Hotel.
In 2007, they took to the stage at festivals such as Peats Ridge, Newtown's Dreamfest, Surry Hills Festival, Glebe Street Fair and Feelgood Festival. Recognised as the "performance highlight" of the Urban Music Awards, they were nominated in the Urban and Artist of the Year categories at the MusicOz Awards where they also performed to close to the show. They were hailed on the cover of the Sydney Morning Herald's Metro Magazine as the "Next Big Things", and were honoured when joined onstage by the legendary John Blackwell and other members of Justin Timberlake's band at the launch of their single Zabbadouai (Back In The Day).
By 2008 the line up had shifted to a 4-piece. With the release of their 4 track EP 4-Piece Feed, they took their show on the road for a blistering schedule of 76 shows over 24 weeks across Australia including a month-long residency in Melbourne. The year culminated with a win in the Alternative category at the 2008 MusicOz Awards.
After making a red-carpet appearance at the 2009 MTV Australia Awards, King Farook made an announcement that shocked their fans. Their gruelling tour schedule, combined with new personal priorities for the band's members led to what turned out to be a short-lived breakup. But it wasn't long before friendships were re-forged and in July they announced the reunion and reinstatement of the original 5-piece lineup.
As a new chapter begins, King Farook is poised to continue making fresh music and entertaining live audiences wherever their journey takes them.
