I've been fortunate enough to share the stage with many, many wonderful musicians over the years. So, I'll try the daunting task of trying to name them all ... in reverse chronological order:
Here in Nashville: my hubby Nomad, the lovely and talented Colleen McFarland, Damien Clarke, Eve Fleishman, Joe Rathbone, Teddy Larkin, Jim Thacker, Justin Amaral, Amelia White (sang on my album, but still counts in my book), Lizza Connor, Rich Malloy and many many more (if I've forgotten you, please let me know ... it's late)
In Boston: Jeremy Goatcher and Scott Manley, now of the Arielle Silver clan, the fabulous Liz Teutsch, the MIA Jordan Wolfe (if anyone out there knows where he is, tell him to call us!!), Ksenia Mack, our dear friend señor Evan Gutierrez, Ashleigh Souza and many more
In Oregon: my dear friend, the wonderful Laura Kemp (who, by the way, finally got her butt on myspace :-)), TR Kelley, Lewi Longmire, Tony Kaltenburg, Debbie Diedrich ("Girls do Gordon!") Ari "Wookjuice" Lindgren, David Burrow, Tony Figoli, Jivan, Mikee Z, David Hughes (guitar and trumpet!), the boys in Jackass Willie, the boys in Honeybucket, Brian West, Brian Wentzel, Matt Vargas, Chris Funk, Tim Gulsrud (now we're waaaaay back there), Rachel Jones Nordenhok, Detlef Johnson and Cliff Wyland ("Sister Southpaw forever" and I still miss you man). The end.
“Every star in the sky will shine for you.” In the refrain of Ironwood opener “Enjoy the View,” Mare Wakefield might just be singing from experience. The girl from Southeast Texas went from playing Oregon coffee shops to headlining major Northwest festivals before a songwriting scholarship brought her to Boston’s Berklee College of Music which boasts alums such as Gillian Welch and Aimee Mann (two of many artists that Mare has been compared to). Currently based in Nashville, Mare--pronounced Mary--continues her upward trajectory by co-writing with hit songwriters and burning up the highways with her fourth studio album in tow.
The aptly named Ironwood radiates strength with every song, including the woman who calls out all liars in “Enough Bad Love,” the gun-toting girlfriend in “Slimeball,” and the tongue-in-cheek barfly in “Whiskey Does it Better.” Mare celebrates the release of Ironwood with a 5-week tour of the Western US, then heads to Holland and Germany before hitting the Northeast. Check marewakefield.com for more tour info.
Mare was an Honor Award Winner in the 10th annual Great American Songwriting Contest. And they gave us this cute little banner to put up. Thanks guys!
what folks are saying...
"More than your typical fly-by-night coffeehouse folk artist, Wakefield is musically sophisticated, weaving elements of jazz and bluegrass into her compositions ... Don't pass up the opportunity to see her perform." Cheryl Eddy -
San Francisco Bay Guardian -
San Francisco, CA
"At times soft and soulful, at others riotous and rowdy ... a unique and wholly self-evolved performer with that special ingredient." Mark Wehner -
Producer/Host Americana Tonight -
Nashville, TN
"Poignant story-telling, diverse scenarios. Wakefields humor and technique shine from a powerful voice that reaches both ends of the scale." Nicki Ehrlich -
Victory Music Review Magazine
"Cozy brilliance ... Could she be the merger of Maria McKee, Natalie Merchant, Shawn Colvin and Dolly Parton?"
Michelle Manker -
Louisville Eccentric Observer -
Louisville, KY
"Wakefield is Oregon cafes, small Texas towns and twangy Nashville rolled into one. Her guitar and vocals ache in all the right places."
Cranky Crow Music Reviews (online) - Seattle, WA
"Reminiscent of Dar Williams, conjuring up the ghost of Johnny Cash. Her voice is sweet without being saccharine, familiar without sounding like anyone else."
Theresa Hogue - Gazette-Times - Corvallis, OR
"Mare Wakefield is an immensely talented songwriter and performer. She has
immerged as one of Nashville's finest and consistently exceeds the musical
bar. I can only anticipate what will come next!"
