No Kidding is a public/private partnership between YouthLaunch (www.youthlaunch.org) and the Office of the Attorney General. No Kidding hires young parents aged 16-24 and trains them to be peer educators. In turn, peer educators go into schools and community organizations and provide presentations to middle and high school aged youth. Peer educators are paid for every presentation they deliver and are also paid to go and increase their parenting skills, educational goals and service to their communities Here is a break down of the presentations Day One (Session One)- Peer educators get students to brainstorm how their lives would change if they were to get pregnant. They also go into in depth story telling sessions about how they found out we were pregnant, reactions from families and friends and how their lives have changed as a result of getting pregnant. Day Two (Session Two) Peer educator get students to understand the different roles that fathers can play in a child's life. They teach students the ways to establish paternity and how everyone benefits when an unmarried father takes the necessary steps to establish legal paternity for his child/children. Day Three (Session Three) Peer educators get the students to see how much it cost a single parent to raise a child. Students learn how expensive parenting can be through an activity modeled after the Price is Right called 'Babies Cost What'. Students also learn about the child support system and how child support can be a useful tool to a single parent. Each session is ended by getting students to brainstorm what they need to have in place before they decide to have children. The ultimate goals of the No Kidding Program are to get students to delay parenting until financially and emotionally stable and in committed relationships and empower the young people that are already parents to be the best parents and citizens that they can possibly be.
