J. D. Nash started a love for music at a very young age. Listening to country music on the family radio in the morning, and hearing his older sibling's rock and roll records in the afternoon. The love only grew stronger over time and soon consumed him.
Picking up the guitar at the age of 15 (mom didn't want drums in the house anymore) he started, as so many do, by singing in church. Weekly rehearsals, choir and theater in school and jamming with neighborhood friends honed his vocal skills.
He'll be the first to admit that he doesn't play guitar (he plays at it) he uses the flat top as a tool to write original music.
Starting out in a rock band called "Cheyenne" in the late 70's he fronted the band providing the vocals for some very talented musicians including Brian Coon, Frank "Animal" Passerella, Danny Barrazza and Jaime Cortez. Playing mostly friend's parties and whatever local biker bars they could sneak into.
At the same time, he was developing skills as a D.J. Attending a small Catholic high school he d.j.'d the dances for free with his partner in spining the discs, Pat McDonald. This gave him an opportunity to hear whatever new music was coming out...in all genres.
During a 10 year stint in the Navy, he was able to work with some local bands wherever he was stationed. One in particular, was a rock oldies band called "Flashback" which was made up of 4 U.S. military guys stationed in Turkey. The band became quite popular, playing in both U.S. and Turkish clubs in several cities. But as all things go in the military life, members of Flashback started getting transferred to other places and the band broke up.
Upon the end of his military enlistment he returned to Arizona where he took up DJ'ing again, full time at several clubs in the East Valley suburbs of Phoenix. The whole time writing down lyrics and recording his songs on cassette tape wherever he was living.
In 1999, J.D. moved to Topeka, Kansas due to the failing health of his father. He got a job as a maintenance mechanic, then again, as a club D.J. Many nights he spent in the bars and taverns of the area singing Karaoke or sitting in with local bands for a song or two. Anywhere a local band was playing, be it Backlash, The Desperado Band, Aces High, Blue Chip & Co., Shawn Ward or several others, J.D. usually got to belt one out with the band.
During a karaoke contest at a North Topeka bar, a gentleman by the name of Lee Wilkinson, himself an accomplished singer and musician, heard J.D. sing and offered him a shot at cutting a record. Some short weeks later, using the living room of his mobile home as a studio, "Spellbound", J.D.'s debut CD was born. Recorded on the run, and mixed on the fly, Spellbound was available almost immediately.
Spellbound has been sold primarily out a backpack that J.D. carries around with him and at a few record stores including Prairie Edge Music in South Dakota.
Track ..5 on the CD, "Flight of the Hawkman" received airplay on a show called "Different Drums" which is broadcast weekly on the American Indian Radio On Satellite Network. It has been rerecorded for the upcoming CD project.
J.D. jokes that the CD went "aluminum" selling at least 100 copies.
In June of 2005, J.D. signed with RunningMouth Media, a promotions and record company in Jersey City, New Jersey, owned by NAMMY award winning artist, Wayquay.
In early 2006, J.D. returned to the studio...a real one this time...and began laying down tracks for a second CD, "So There I Was..." which is scheduled for release in December 2006.
A little country, a little rock a little blues and a lot of Indian attitude make J.D. what he is. Give him a listen and holler like hell if you like it!
