Osymsyo has been making music using computers since the late eighties. Sometimes he's creating warped electro hip hop and somethimes he's smashing up popular culture so he can put it back together again in a more intersting way. It's music with humour that still manages to sound credible with an attention to detail that sets it apart from the lazy slap dash sampling by numbers that we find so prevalent these days.
Hip hop’s answer to Aphex Twin, one afternoon in 1998 Osymyso created “Pat n’ Peg”, an annoying yet hugely popular cut-up of Eastenders which features two old women slapping each other repeatedly whilst screaming “You Bitch, You Cow!” The track was finally self released in 2000 and sold out in weeks and in 2001 a free download on the net of a video to the track resulted in over 100,000 downloads in a month.
In 2001 on the cusp of what we now know as the 'Bootleg' scene and just before the term mash up was about to become common parlance osymyso decided it would be a good idea to string 101 intro's from well known pop songs into one strange mix. The result of this experiment became known as Intro-inspection and it was a hugely popular download and vinyl release that captured the imagination of people from all courners of the world and of all ages. The 'Art Set' stroked their chins and talked at length about the cultural ramifactions of such an act whilst the less pretentious challenged each other in pub quizes and tried to figure out what all the songs used were (There is one very well disguised intro that not one person has guessed to this day).
Humour is an important aspect of Osymyso’s style and it was with a sense of honour and surprise that he has managed to work with some of his comedy hero’s. In 2002 he made a video remix of “My Wrongs ..8245-8249 & 117”, a short film by Chris Morris which was followed in early 2003 by a second collaboration “Bushwhacked 2”, a 12” released on Warp Records. More recently he created “Spaced Jam” a video montage of his favourite sitcom “Spaced” and produced the soundtrack album for “Shaun of the Dead”. Simon Pegg of Spaced fame also provided his drumming skills on “Pandemonium” as part of the latest Osymyso release. The comedy connection is continuing on a weekly basis as he mixes “The Milk Run”, a late night music and comedy show on late night Radio One which has run for over 50 one hour episodes. The show recently reached the top 5 of “Listen Again” shows from the Radio One website.
Receiving critical acclaim from The Guardian, The New York Times, The Face and Record Collector who have all lauded him with praise for his role in the “bootleg” scene as well as being named as one of the 10 DJ’s you must see before you die in Q Magazine.
Osymyso is currently recording new material for his second album which has been almost finished and scrapped on numerous occasions. Hopefully we should see something before 2011.
