PATINA was formed in the summer of 2003. PATINA style is a combination of anciant Latgalian singing ( called - bolsi) and jazz music. Latgale ( the region of Eastern Latvia) is the geographical origin of bolsi singing and home of variety of nations and cultures. As time passes, Latgale has preserved its uniquely characteristic dialect and traditions, as well as an impressive quantity of ancient songs. Folklorists visit Latgale regularily, to record and document their oral tradition. One of PATINA's main ideas is to revive this particular style of singing. This endeavor (undertaken by group leader Biruta Ozolina) requires a special understanding, which can be reached by meticulous research and study of various archived authentic recordings. Finally, "patina" is a matter which gives ancient objects their historical value. Folk music deserves similar regard.
