"The Kirkland Art Center is committed to involving the community in a range of cultural and artistic experiences and opportunities." The Kirkland Art Center

The Kirkland Art Center was established more than 40 years ago in the second floor of the town library as a meeting place. From the beginning there were classes, exhibitions, films, concerts and lectures. The KAC is now an active, regional, multi-arts center, located in an old church, barn and connecting addition, on the village green. The nature of the activities and mission has stayed steadfast, but with the support of the community, members, volunteers, funding sources and guidance from the NYSCA, our programming has broadened. Demonstrating quality, diversity and multi-cultural programming, both at our facility and off-site, the KAC has become a major cultural force in central New York and through cooperation with other cultural institutions has developed a network of services and opportunities for artists and art lovers of all disciplines.

JOHN FORD AND FRIENDS
[John Ford of The Strawbs]
TEASER BIO

John Ford’s unusual percussive style of bass playing caught Strawbs leader Dave Cousin's eye during a performance at Dave's folk club in Hounslow and John joined the Strawbs in May 1970. John Ford's influence with the Strawbs, primarily known as a Folk Rock group, shifted into a new direction in the Prog-Art Rock Scene. John penned perennial favourites, 'Heavy Disguise' and 'Part of the Union,' which became the Strawbs’ biggest Chart Hit at 2, included on the album, Bursting At The Seams. POTU, spent 59 weeks on the album charts, rising to Top of the Pops fame, also released as a Single. Working with Producer, Tony Visconti (Bowie / T-Rex) on A&M. John Ford received three Gold and Platinum Records, to boot.

Strawbs Reunited
John teamed up again with The Strawbs 30 Year Reunion Tour in 1998, performing as bass guitarist and vocalist, after a hiatus since the late 80s with the Strawbs, following Johns move to the US, then again for the 2001 Strawbs UK Spring Tour. July 2004, the STRAWBS SUMMER UK ELECTRIC TOUR in England, featured John on bass and vocals with the original UK electric lineup from the 70s, Highpoints of the tour included The 30th Trowbridge Pump Festival with the Strawbs, doing both the Electric and Acoustic line-ups, headlining for two nights to over 6,000 fans. The STRAWBS UK ELECTRIC TOUR performed to sold-out shows at venues ranging from richly, restored performing arts theatres like Huntingdon Hall and trendy hot spots, such as The Under World in London and others throughout the UK, with much success. March 2006, John Ford was featured on the STRAWBS SPRING UK ELECTRIC TOUR UK which included a DVD filming for an upcoming release. Aside from the dozens of recordings John's been on, some of his live performances can be viewed on DVD with Strawbs Live In Tokyo '75 & GRAVE NEW WORLD - The Movie, The Complete Strawbs - Live at Chiswick House and other Top of the Pops and Old Grey Whistle Test shows, some of which are on YouTube.

For detailed version of John’s wonderful contributions to the great world of music can be found at his website.

ACOUSTIC TRAUMA
BIOGRAPHY

Try to imagine the crisp sound of an acoustic guitar accompanied by a powerful rhythm section. Now add the variables of massive experimentation along with mysterious lyrics and mood-enhancing visual effects. Following the example of the "classic rock" genre, Acoustic Trauma aims to provide a complete entertainment experience for their audience.

Acoustic Trauma is a trio whose concept and goal is to defy the common stereotype that has tagged acoustic rock as being "laid back" or "tame". In the 1990's, many popular bands have toned down their acts, characterizing themselves as being "unplugged". Acoustic Trauma, with the use of some effects (electric distortion NOT being one of them), has proven that acoustic instruments are not limited to stool or sit down performances. Their strength lies in their instrumentation as it consists of finger- blistering acoustic guitar solos, strong drumbeats, intense violin playing, and many inventive bass leads.

The term "acoustic trauma", refers to a medical diagnosis that is associated with hearing loss due to the continued exposure to loud sounds. The name was chosen, for it serves as a definitive pun, both identifying the band by definition as well as their goal in attempting to "traumatize" the acoustic world. Metroland, an Albany alternative publication, calls Acoustic Trauma "a challenging and intriguing new band." They have also ranked Spirits and Reward of the Angel's Pride among the top ten local CDs in the Capital Region at the time of their release dates. Metroland has also named Acoustic Trauma "Best Prog (Progressive) Band" two years in a row in their Best of issues (1999 & 2000).

CATHEDRAL
BIOGRAPHY

Cathedral was founded in 1975, one of a very few original progressive bands to come out of New York in its time. The band's early phase lasted only four years culminating in the legendary "Stained Glass Stories" album, recorded in the Times Square area in 1977. They played the New York club scene and then a small series of self-promoted concerts before disbanding in 1979.

The "Stained Glass" album, however, continued to pick up momentum and became much sought after by collectors. It was re-released on CD in the early 90's by Syn-Phonics. Mercury formed "Industry" during the 80's and was signed with Capital Records.

Tom founded many experimental projects, built instruments and performed mixed media in underground venues. Rudy Perrone wrote and produced "Oceans of Art" which featured several Cathedral members.

In 2003, at Fred Callan's bidding, the band was reformed. The original Mellotron and prominent bass sound was immediately reactivated. Cathedral took several years, though, to accommodate new technologies and evolve its writing styles into something truly modern.

David Doig joined the band as guitarist in 2006 and took Cathedral further into new territories. Work on "The Bridge" began at Ian London studios in 2006 and the finished project was released a year later. Cathedral has recently been signed by the French progressive rock label "Musea". The band is currently well into writing it's next album's worth of material and performing.

FLUTTR EFFECT
BIOGRAPHY

Fluttr Effect is a happy accident, the intersection of the right people and the right sounds at the right time. The band started in 2002 as a four-piece called Fluttr with Troy Kidwell on guitar and vocals, Jason Marchionna on drums, Vessela Stoyanova on MIDI marimba, and Valerie Thompson on electric cello. A few months later, Kara Trott saw the group opening for Rasputina and knew she wanted in. With their new lead singer, Fluttr prepared to take off.

The band developed a loyal fan base playing rock clubs, colleges, benefits, art centers, and festivals. In 2004, Fluttr competed in the Emergenza Music Festival. They represented the Northeast at the National Finals at the Avalon, met some great bands from around the country and picked up some great new fans too. Even better, they won - Fluttr performed as the U.S. finalist in front of a crowd of 30,000 at the Taubertal Music Festival in Germany.

Later that same year, Fluttr's name change came about. In the fall of 2004 the band released their first full-length CD, Trithemis Festiva, and became Fluttr Effect. For the next year plus, the band toured unceasingly in the U.S. and Canada, further developing their audience and their particular brand of "thinkrock" - smart, haunting, unrelenting rock music.

In February 2006, the girls released Swallows and Sparrows as the Fluttr Effect Trio. This acoustic wing of the band exposes the fragile under layers of their songs through marimba, cello and vocals. The EP features instrumental compositions alongside fresh arrangements of songs from Trithemis Festiva and Marking Time.

CMEAS selected Fluttr Effect as one of three acts from a worldwide pool of applicants for a two-week tour of England in the spring of 2006. The van was crowded, the bacon was different, and the cars all drove on the wrong side of the street; but the audiences were responsive, the hosts were generous, and the shows were rocking. The band will invade again in May and June 2007, returning to East Anglia and beyond, including a performance at the Glasgow Music Festival. Visit the live page for details as they become available.

Marking Time, Fluttr Effect's second full-length CD released in fall 2006, is a tapestry, a finely woven album of complex, playful instrumentation and insistent vocals. Marking Time is a truly independent undertaking: a CD ushered into the world not just by Fluttr Effect's musical talents. In addition to composing and performing the tracks, the band raised funds, engineered, and designed the project. Check the live page for an ever-growing list of shows and the music page for samples of new tunes.

LAURIE LARSON
BIOGRAPHY

Radio veteran Laurie Larson has been on the air playing Progressive Rock for over 20 years. She has also been a Program Director, Operations Manager and Music Director for several commercial radio stations. Laurie’s passion is all about the music - especially all things Progressive-it’s why she got into radio in the first place.

This American singer/songwriter has two albums, ''Artist's Mirage'' and ''Aquila''. She has worked with Daniel Paul (Ravi Shankar and Van Morrison), Ralph Gilmore (Grass Roots), Ed DeLucia (Linda Ronstadt) and Jim Brady (Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young & Kenny Rogers). Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Richie Furay (Buffalo Springfield, Poco) ordered the tracks on her latest release, ''Aquila''.

Her third album, “A Striking Resemblance” hits the street May 5th 2008. An advance Track "A Call to Action" is on the January / February 2008 Global Rhythm Collector's CD, their review:

There's a bit of the desert in Arizona-based Laurie Larson's stately folk-pop songs. Her zephyr-like tenor brings a solitary, mournful air to the opening of "A Call to Action", pushing the song into a double-time beat that flies by like the mile markers on an open highway. Track 1, "Endless Thank You Loop" features Jim Roberts on Hammond B3. He is also mixing "Artist's Mirage Two". Jim Roberts has produced, performed on or engineered records for John Entwistle (The Who), Kansas, Steve Walsh (Kansas), Leslie West (Mountain), Joe Franco (Twisted Sister), Joel Kosche (Collective Soul), Steve Luongo and Mark Hitt (TorQue) and others. Recording engineer Jim Brady (Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young), is mixing the rest of the tracks and plays bass. Guitarist Ed DeLucia (Linda Ronstadt) and Grass Roots drummer Ralph Gilmore also team up with Laurie Larson on the new album. All songs are written by Laurie Larson, as in her previous releases.

ROB METZ
BIOGRAPHY

The very first time Rob Metz picked up a guitar he felt a sense of familiarity.

The instrument immediately felt like an old friend to him. Even though it was a first encounter, he somehow knew that playing was right and that music would ultimately offer him a wide-open avenue of expression.

That first encounter was over two decades ago. Metz's relationship with his "old friend" and his music grew and strengthened over the years. Today, he can't imagine a life without his guitar and music.

"Playing the guitar is the most pure language that I can use. It's my way to express, to feel... to reach out - to connect," he said.

A real turning point for Metz's musical career came some years ago in the form of one small comment from his drummer at the time, Len Grabowski. "After a rehearsal one day, Len said that I sounded like Joe Satriani. Until that time I had not been exposed to instrumental music at all. So, I went out and bought a Satch record. From that moment, my musical journey was really on."

Metz's musical journey led to the release of his first CD in 2006; the CD is entitled Legion of Dreams. Metz's musical mix on Legion is solid classic rock with bluesy experimentation and a bit of industrial-strength shredding. The blend found on Legion is an example of how Metz views life's extremes and the depth of emotions available within music. He purposely varied Legions collection to show how music has the far-reaching ability to stimulate, hurt and heal, and fortify the spirit. He describes the Legion of Dreams collection as "a voyage into mystic melody."

Metz love for the guitar and his passion for music began when he was 15 years old. His mom did not have a lot of money back then, but she sacrificed and bought him a used Kramer Striker. He tagged along with a buddy whose parents paid for guitar lessons. There he closely watched and learned from the instructor. After listening and observing at those lessons, Metz began to teach himself how to play - spending hours honing his craft and deepening his relationship with his guitar. "I would play for hours along with my Iron Maiden records," Metz said. "I must have worn out two or three copies of Powerslave."

Today, Metz is now the teacher. He has students who come to his Akron, Ohio studio to begin their journeys into the realm of music. "I teach because I want to help my students foster that ability to express themselves through music," he said. Metz also added that he not only teaches, but also learns from his students. "They all have something to share," he said. "As human beings we all have a unique and valid point of view and I appreciate and learn from what my students have to say."

The highlight of the musical experience for Metz comes when he performs for a live audience. "When I perform I get to share the fruits of my labor," he said.

Metz considers his music a gift that he carefully prepares for his audience. Perfecting his craft and expressing emotion through his music is definitely something Metz needs to do, to share - while he hopes that his audience receives the nuances within his expressive messages.

A critic, who reviewed the Legion of Dreams, took note of Metz's ability and desire to share a musical exploration with his audience. He wrote, "You don't get any other impression than of a musician who's got one eye on the audience's enjoyment... rather than both eyes on his technique."

"I consider myself a Shaman who shows the audience a glimpse of something from the other side. Something supernatural and special that is brought from a realm inside me - a realm that cannot be accessed any other way," Metz said. "We all possess these realms of discovery and I am pleased to explore that inner journey with the people familiar with it and I'm happy to start this journey with the un-initiated."

Ultimately, Metz's musical inspiration comes from his life experiences and his dreams. Most notably - the experiences he shares with his family deeply influence his music. "They inspire me everyday," he said. "My family inspires me to create, to grow, and to evolve into a man who is more than he was yesterday."

QUEEN AUGUST
BIOGRAPHY

Queen August was born in the Spring of 2004 by Gino Cappuccetti and Alex Collins in hopes to bring the artistic side of music back to the masses. At the time, Gino's keyboard playing was in its beginning stages, only starting a route in music just a year before forming this group.

As Gino's ideas grew, the lineup would begin to change. Taking odd time signatures, complex chord structures, Intense lyrical content and blazing solo work,

Queen August quickly established itself in Northern New York as one of the premiere talent outfits. 2 and a half years of writing and testing these complex pieces with a live audience, Queen August changed lineups 11 times in total,

Gino the only founding member remaining. Queen August picked up the heavy talents of Justin Reynolds on Bass, Who's influences included that of heavy metal music, along with a strong connection to classic 70's prog groups Yes and King Crimson.

Norman Shampine also joined on guitars, bringing his extreme alternate picking technique very relative to the likes of Robert Fripp and Steve Howe.

Santino Cappuccetti, brother of Gino, drummed 2 years with the group on and off and was a major factor in the music of Queen August. Santino has more recently been replaced by 14 year old drum prodigy, Tom Contino. The band continues to push the limits of music with Queen August and will surface in Los Angelos in the next coming years.

STORMS APPROACH
BIOGRAPHY

Melodic prog-metal band STORMS APPROACH was formed in 2005 in the greater Boston area. Since then they've released a self-titled album, supporting it by playing shows around New England area.

The band's musical influences run the gambit, but accomplished vocalist Anne Collins has earned STORMS APPROACH comparisons to Lacuna Coil and Evanescence. Drummer Chris Munroe, lead guitarist Eric Clemenzi, and bassist Steve Belleville met playing in a Dream Theater tribute band, which accounts for the group's progressive nature. Rhythm guitarist Scott Randall, formerly of Somber Blessings, brings with him a background of doom metal and classical music.

STORMS APPROACH combines these various elements to achieve pop-sensible metal, likened to Porcupine Tree, Within Temptation, and Opeth. Their further diabolical aspirations include world domination and post-rehearsal ice cream socials
