Robbie and the Robots is an Austin/San Marcos, TX based indie-rock band led by frontman Robbie Doyen. Robbie’s exciting stage personality and fun, memorable songs like “Drug Free Sabbath”, “Porn”, and “Small Town Psycho Crazy Girlfriend Blues” have helped this band leave a large imprint on the Texas rock music scene.
Robbie has been writing songs ever since he got his first $100 classical guitar at the age of 16. After he broke the neck off of that guitar while learning to play Metallica songs he moved on to a new acoustic and started performing with bands. He was in Cool Little Guy, Robaho Spuds, Pavlov's Dogs, Sack Check, and Too Small Shoes. Finally, wanting a solid band name that would not change each time he switched band members, and that could not be stolen from him by the band members if he left the band, he decided on Robbie and the Robots. Now he mainly plays a red Fender Stratocaster that he flings wildly about the stage during shows. Robbie also has Degrees from Texas State University in English and Psychology, is a high ranking Tae Kwan Do and Kung Fu artist, and a freelance journalist. In fact he even spent a season writing about the San Antonio Spurs for WOAI.com.
Surrounding Robbie is an extremely talented group of musicians. Sterling Finlay is the bass player. His father is Kent Finlay, owner of the legendary San Marcos venue Cheatham Street Warehouse. Sterling gets into a lot of trouble in his life, but once he meanders his shoeless feet onto the stage he’s rock solid. Luke Pierce is the drummer. He is also a DJ on Texas State University’s KTSW. Luke has had to put up with Robbie’s shenanigans longer than any other band member. He’s been in the band now for over two of the five years it has existed. A new addition to the band is lead guitar player Nick Garcia. He’s a music student at Texas State University. Nick has great stage presence, and his blazing hot solos are Guitar Hero worthy.
They have appeared in venues all over the state of Texas in cities like, Austin, San Marcos, San Angelo, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Houston, Dallas, Denton and Ft. Worth. They also have a single playing on radio stations around Texas called “Small Town Psycho Crazy Girlfriend Blues”, from their album “Todaysterday”.
Robbie often plays by himself. When doing so he sets up a tent, a moon, stars, and an electronic campfire that he built himself and plays an acoustic set of original songs and some of his favorite cover songs. He also sets up his campfire backdrop at the Open Mic he hosts at Lucy's in San Marcos every Monday.
Print media has taken notice of Robbie and the Robots as well. Many stories have been written about them lately including a June 2007 cover story in the San Marcos Scene and being named 2005’s number one alternative band in Austin in the Edge Magazine. Many stories have also been written about SMTX 78666, a compilation CD to benefit research on Fibromyalgia. Produced by Robbie, it includes 19 of San Marcos’ finest bands.
See what people are saying:
"Groups like Robbie and the Robots come around only once in a while: Usually at a time when you find yourself stuffing more and more bar napkins into your ears and thinking, 'they all sound alike.'
The Robots are carefully clumsy, tastefully raw and their lyrics are a good reason to remove the napkin plugs, lest the semi-sweet but dark humor, fly right by." --Mark Kneubuhl from San Angelo LIVE!
“Their show is going to be great. It’s totally super-fun music, great melodies and debauched lyrics,” Howard said. “You’ll feel really dirty after listening to the lyrics, but I promise you — it’s worth it.” -Andrew Howard of Rockus Circus
2004:
Number 1 Alternative band in Austin Number 5 Best Party Band in Austin Number 1 Best Acoustic Guitar Player in Austin 2005: Number 2 Alternative band in Austin Number 5 Best Party Band in Austin -The Edge Magazine: San Antonio
“Todaysterday is a great album for those who love genuinely creative and incredibly witty rock and roll music.” -G*:The San Marcos Scene: San Marcos, TX
“I fell in love with this band back in the summer. I was already mesmerized with childlike glee and excitement before they even started to play. You see, on stage, they set up a tent and campfire. They hang a giant moon and some stars. Then the lights go dim and then they start to play some of the cleverest, wry, funny shit you've ever heard.” -Amanda Newman from Boca Tinta in Dallas, TX
“A delighful mix of surf-rock, geek-rock, and pretty much every other kind of rock.” -Jennifer Pollack from the San Marcos Scene: San Marcos, TX
“He bounces around the stage aimlessly like a doped-up Richard Simmons with scraggly, uncombed hair. His songs make sweet pop music magic in a Beach Boys-meets-Weezer-meets-The Go Go’s sort of way.” -Jeff Walker from the University Star: San Marcos, TX
