Tricia Godwin discovered her musical soul as a very small child playing the piano at her babysitters’ house. Thank goodness those caretakers saw something magical and convinced Tricia’s parents to invest in music lessons. At age six, Tricia started taking classical/flamenco guitar lessons; learning to read music while learning to read English….a fire was lit…..inextinguishable and all-encompassing.
On her twelfth birthday, Gemini-Monkey Tricia received her first electric guitar and 60-watt amplifier. Her parents were unbelievably tolerant as she experimented with electric sounds, textures and harmonics blasting out of her room. By then, Tricia was already playing drums, bass and alto saxophone as well as guitar. The progressing years would see Tricia in Benicia California’s Middle and High School marching bands playing drums and percussion, in concert bands playing the newly adopted French horn, and in jazz bands playing swing, Latin, pop, and rock guitar. Tricia was also a member of the Concord Blue Devil’s Drum and Bugle core in 1985, touring California, Nevada, Utah, Montana and Wyoming playing marimbas and xylophones.
In college, Tricia continued her musical studies in music theory, composition, and instruction.
She formed the band Severance with drummer (now bassist for All The New) E-rich Elleson, and vocalist Michael Garcia (Electric Jesus). Severance cut its teeth playing all over the SF Bay Area most often at the Berkeley Square…..the best club back in the day.
1992 through early 1996, Tricia played lead guitar with singer-songwriter Laura Chandler. Once again, she played all over the SF Bay Area, Monterey, Santa Cruz and ventured to the East Coast at clubs like NYC’s The Bitter End and CBGB’s gallery, Nashville’s Bluebird Café (“a fine picker for a girl!”), and Atlanta’s Eddie’s Attic.
1996 brought a new experience for Tricia: injury. An industrial work injury threatened to end Tricia’s music career. She had suffered a major spinal injury. The rehabilitation would be excruciatingly painful and difficult. ……enter Owens Hoady and Urban Life Music. This chance meeting changed Tricia’s perspective forever. In the womb of Urban Life’s studio, Tricia could build up her body and soul again playing and recording the funkiest, most soulful guitar riffs and melodies with the some of the best artists the Bay Area and beyond has to offer.
1997 saw the release of “Straight to the Jugular Vein”, Urban Life’s debut. Tricia not only played guitar, bass or both on every track, but also co-mixed the album with Owens Hoady to create some of the funkiest sounds of the times. Artists who have worked with Urban Life include: Shock-G from Digital Underground, Kevin Richardson (formally of the Backstreet Boys), Fabolous, B-Legit, Ray Luv, D-Loc, Dap Daniel, and many others.
On October 31st, 2002, Tricia left her Oaktown home in the Bay Area for Mendocino County. This move brought even more opportunity. Continuing her relationship with Urban Life, Tricia started meeting so many friendly and talented musicians localized in paradise……because Mendocino County is paradise! Tricia has played with Human and the Other Humans and is featured playing on the songs “Will You” and “Tree of Life” on Human’s new release “Breathe”. Check out the “Breathe” album at: http://www.thehumanrevolution.org/.
Tricia also began playing acoustic guitar, electric 6 & 12 string guitars, and bass with the Druid Sisters Tea Party . Tricia adds shimmering flamenco, world groove, and a touch of rock to the Druid sound. Check out the Druid Sisters Tea Party release “Gypsy Love Caravan” available at http://cdbaby.com/cd/dsteaparty
Tricia has also been sighted playing lead guitar with Gwen Avery, Lila Nelson, Amelia White, Margy Crowningshield and Linda Rose Stonestreet…..she played vibes in a benefit concert with legendary producer Bill Botrell’s band. She has shared the stage with such artists as Chris Isaak, Ferron, Sonya Heller, Scott Huckabay, Joanne Rand, Diane Patterson, Wildsang, Kitty Rose, Carolyn Brandy, Shana Morrison and many other great ones. Tricia has played respected venues and festivals including 2006 Pride March, Northern California Women’s Music Festival, Ardenwood Celtic Faire, Benbow Summer Arts & Music Festival….just listing a few.
