Sounds LikeIndiana Jones: if the idea of Indiana Jones was music, that's what it'd sound like. But not the Indiana Jones of rock, because that sounds lame. Because saying something is like the something of blah blah blah is just lame. Like saying we're the Ayn Rand of cricket, for example.

pieces of the LAST SHOW
THE IS OUR LAST SHOW EVER!!!! After six years of playing out as The Unbearables, we've decided to retire the band in order to create some new beginnings--it's been a great run and a shitload of fun, but the time has come to move on. Come out to hear this incarnation of this band for the last time ever, wish Josh good luck in Houston, and hear some songs we haven't played for a long, long time (Parking Meter, anyone?). There's going to be a lot of drinking. UNDER 21 MUST RSVP to LADYMAYBE@GMAIL.COM by MAY 1!!!

The Unbearables are an orchestral pop collective from Austin, Texas. Founded in 2003 as a garage punk rock outlet for school music director and group leader, Marshall Escamilla, the band's evolution began as it attracted other accomplished musicians. The Unbearables started incorporating elements of modern and classical arrangements into tightly compacted pop gems, resulting in a critically acclaimed score to an Austin produced play entitled "Bitten!: A Zombie Rock Odyssey".

After the production's quick success, The Unbearables left the zombie motif behind and began further pushing the sonic envelope. The band has expanded with massive choral arrangements, a multi-array of synthesizers, woodwinds, and percussive instruments, all played with high-energy enthusiasm, astonishing Texas audiences as well as the press.

The Unbearables' latest release, an EP called "Autonomy vs. Shame" is the first in a three-part series of concept EPs that musically portray the life cycle. Combining references to Greek Numerology, Jungian psychology, the Book of Genesis, and Alcoholic's Anonymous 12-step program, each song in the series represents a numerical progression from birth through adolescence, middle age, old age, and ultimately honoring the end of life. Containing numerous time signature experiments--with each song reflecting in some way its numerical place in the larger story--this series of EPs represents a serious departure from anything else the band has tried before. The next in the series, "Intimacy vs. Isolation", is due out in February 2009.

Recent reviews have compared The Unbearables' sound to other like-minded artists such as Sufjan Stevens, Weezer, The Flaming Lips, and The Kinks, mainly due to the Austin musicians' advanced and adventurous musical ambition, as well as their creative stage presentation complete with colorful guising and handmade stage props. Combine the dramatic flair with infectious high-energy fun and you have audiences singing their praises.

THE UNBEARABLES are a smart, fun, and wonderfully melodic musical experience not to miss.

from See What You Hear.com:

"This band's sound is so enormous that with nine musicians seemingly building upward using everything from Moogs to flutes, it can't help but be bouyant."

from Said the Gramophone.com:

"Beach blanket magic carpet clarinet-i-tron. Evergreen radar wheel christmas carol. Electric ripping Madonna helicopter shot. Lonely forest hippie garden circle. Reproachful firm but fair organ leads to massive guitar climb and inevitable fall."

from East Austinite.com:

"Their sound has been compared to Sufjan Stevens, which is apparent in their full orchestral sound and the choral-like female vocals on several tracks.....though these guys break out the electric guitars and rock riffs more than Sufjan…they have lots of horns and strings, which we generally find enjoyable."

from Here Comes The Flood:

"The West Coast sound moved East and ended up in Austin, TX. The Unbearables are releasing Autonomy vs. Shame, the first installment of a three part EP series. This nine piece band sounds like The Mamas & The Papas with a bit of Dave Davies' guitar licks thrown in. File under Polyphonic Spree melodic indie rock. They are into zombies but they are very much alive."
